Whoopi defends Vick.
Do you see what I'm getting at here?
Come on folks, we can do better than this! I'm sick of the "I no longer like {X (usually black) celebrity} because s/he defended Vick" threads. Explaining and understanding the "WHY" of a situation is NOT the same thing as defending it!

1. Quite a stretch there. |
|
Look, Whoopie justified Vick's actions, by the bullshit culture line.

2. No, she didn't. She explained it. |
|
She didn't say it was all right. Your problem with it is she did not follow up with "and because of that he is a sadistic puke". Some things are better left implied.

that she didn't call him a sadistic puke, but excellent job not only putting words in my mouth, but thoughts in my head. Not exactly commendable.

5. Aren't you doing the same with her? |
|
Because she didn't specifically say "and I hate him for it", you are assuming it was a justification when there is no evidence it was any such thing. Lack of condemnation does not equal approval.
I know another sport where people, not animals, are severely injured and sometimes killed. There is a culture that surrounds that sport which not only does not condemn it but celebrates it. To people who are not part of that culture it is incomprehensible that the risk and violence is not roundly condemned. Wouldn't a person's life be counted as more valuable than an animal's?
Am I talking about Football? Sky Diving? Scuba Diving? Skiing?
We are each comfortable with our own enculturation, and do not tend to recognize the inherant problems with it. You condemn her for not condemning him, even though she did nothing but say, "this is the way it is with a certain subculture". Again, explanation is not justification.

6. It's a ridiculous comment. |
|
And I didn't say she defended Vick. I said she justified what he did. That's not putting words in her mouth. As for your comparison to a sport where humans get hurt, is it not flippin' obvious to you that people make a choice to fight or play football or whetever, animals do not.

3. Listen, you have to expect this sort of thing. |
|
We live in a country where a lot of people are functionally illiterate, and they can't, don't, or won't understand the difference between an explanation and a defense.
