This is another good reason I have never liked this guy very much.

12. Here it is:
"Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son," he said, pointing to one camera.

"Jessie, the illiterate *," Lewis said, pointing to the other.

"No," he said then, as some audience members laughed.

While it looks to me as if he's trying to take it back, it still pisses me off.

40. Thanks for the transcript, but...
It sounded more like the audience was gasping than laughing. People may laugh in shock, of course. This is why comedians drop the F-bomb and the N-bomb in their routines constantly. If somethings not funny you can always shock people into laughing.

I don't excuse Jerry Lewis for saying this, but I would point out he's from a different generation. LBJ was the most important president for civil rights in the 20th century but he used the N word quite (excuse the phrase) liberally in his private conversations.

I expect we'll be hearing an apology from Lewis in the next 48 hours.

Jerry Lewis apologizes for anti-gay slur

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Jerry Lewis apologized on Tuesday for his use of an anti-gay slur during the weekend broadcast of his annual Labour Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

snip

Lewis issued a statement later in the day through organizers of the telethon saying he was sorry "to anyone who was offended."

"I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard," he said. "The success of the (telethon) and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

more

http://uk.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUKN0444968820070904?pageNumber=2

Edited to add:

His slur was appalling and an apology certainly should have been forthcoming. I am glad he has done so and made it clear there can be NO excuse for his use of the slur, it is more than others have done under relatively similar circumstances.

...I think that I understand your point, but I'd like to take it a step further.
LBJ using the "n" word during that time was (unfortunately) socially acceptable. Blacks as they were known then, were considered "less than." It wasn't right. It just was. But it's important to keep this fact in mind when discussing this issue.

Jerry Lewis using the f word today is inappropriate.
Considering the time he comes from provides some sense of background for the person he is today. But it doesn't excuse or justify his actions.

There are people from that era who haven't(and wouldn't) resort to slurring others in any form. Why is that?

In my opinion, it's about personal mindset and sense of self of the person that chooses to slur others. Yes, it's a choice. It's not a "I'm sooooo sleepy....blah, blah....whoooops, slurred someone gay!" It's about their need to put another person down. It speaks to a belief they hold about the group they are slurring. That the person or group isn't equal to themselves and aren't worthy of respect.

Perhaps it would be informative for people to discuss those possibilities, as opposed to going on about "the era" he comes from, how "fatigued" he was....or even "all the money" he's raised. All of which say to me, people are willing to rationalize repugnant behavior, instead of seeing it for what it is. This too is a choice and we need to think about why that is.

Respectfully submitted,
bliss

edited for clarity.

126. Hardly
Imus did a hell of lot more than a slip of the lip at hour 18...

"On the April 4 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, which is comprised of eight African-American and two white players, as "nappy-headed hos" immediately after the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, called the team "hard-core hos." Later, former Imus sports announcer Sid Rosenberg, who was filling in for sportscaster Chris Carlin, said: "The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors."

McGuirk referred to the NCAA women's basketball championship game between Rutgers and Tennessee as a "Spike Lee thing," adding, "The Jigaboos vs. The Wannabees -- that movie that he had." McGuirk was presumably referring to Lee's 1988 film, School Daze (Sony Pictures), though co-host Charles McCord misidentified it as "Do the Right Thing" (Criterion, June 1989)."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF9BjB7Bzr0

It was unfortunate and reflected Lewis' upbringing in USAmerica in the 20s/30s and what USAmericans still get away with in private in the 21st Century.

I saw the clip, he immediately realized his mistake and showed some remorse for it...what the hell more can we expect?

and my first thought was , "Aren't any of jerry's kids gay? How must they feel?" Someone with as much experience as he has, someone who wants to be looked up to as a role model, whose words touch a lot of people, should know better than to use that slur in this day and age.

It was a different era he was raised in when such words were more acceptable.

Another way of looking at it...

As unpolitically correct as calling someone retarded might be, you don't really have anything against the developmentally challenged when you call someone retarded.

Playing devil's advocate here.

29. That's it? Unfortunate, yes. Bothersome, yes. Enough to undo the
good works of the night and the last 50 years? Give the old guy a break. In Jerry's day, Don Rickles made a fortune off incredibly worse, exceedingly mean-spirited outright rants. Definetly not condoning or defending the slur, but Jerry is really from a different time regarding such things. I don't beleive he even realized what he was saying.

I deleted my response. My hope was to avoid an interaction like this. It's clear to me that many here are lacking in reading comprehension skills. As such, it's frequently a waste of my time and energy.

I said that your comments were LIKE saying that Hitler was ok because it was acceptable to torture Jews at that time. Because YOU attributed the era he's from to what he said, as if that's a reasonable excuse.

You choose to see my post as a direct comparison of Jerry Lewis and Hitler, instead of a response commenting on (what I saw) as the dismissive nature of yours.

But the guy is 81 years old. I don't love or hate Jerry Lewis, but I do admire the work he does for MDA.

Though I'm not quite an illiterate fag (just a plain fag), there are larger, more important issues to tackle than the ramblings of an old man.

Plus, this will probably result in a flame in reply, I kind of giggle each time I read the story. Come on... an illerate f....? What was Jerry thinking?!

He was up over 24 hours. He was exhausted. I am so sick of people complaining over feelings being hurt and demanding apologies.

Imus lost his job over saying something stupid. Does anyone care that Imus raises about 43 million a year for children charities. Thanks to those selfish, basketball players who played victim for weeks, these charities will suffer.

Jerry was so exhausted he probably doesn't even remember what he said. Should the telephone be scrapped because of this? Should we tell all those people with MD to got to hell, because Jerry Lewis said something stupid?

I really hate back handed, conditional apologies. "If" I offended anyone. :eyes: Clearly he did or it wouldn't be an issue. One has to "own" what they did and take responsibility for their actions. Can't do that while qualifying it with the "if."

That's not an apology at all.

Thank you for the details.

I can't find where he said "if I offended". (I don't like the "to anyone who was" either, but I think he goes on & gives about as good of an apology as I've heard in years. Which isn't saying much.)

Here's the quote:

Lewis issued a statement later in the day through organizers of the telethon saying he was sorry "to anyone who was offended."

"I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard," he said. "The success of the (telethon) and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

66. It serves to disenfranchise persons with disabilities
Disabilities will always be a part of the human continuum. Research into prevention and treatment is critical. However, when fund raising if PWDs are presented as broken, pathetic, etc., more harm is done than good. It would've been nice if those millions that Jerry has raised had been applied to accessibility, and integration and acceptance into regular society.

It was the 1st time in almost six years on this board that I was actually hurt by comments from people that refused to believe he was not the great man they claimed him to be.

His actions and words are not due to his age. He's been running the pity marathons and demeaning the disabled for years!

88. Jerry Lewis on people with disabilities
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 08:22 PM by KamaAina
http://www.raggededgemagazine.com/departments/mediacircusblog/000624.html

Or maybe he'd forgotten about the group that formed in 1990 in protest of his infamous Sept. 2 Parade magazine article that year, "What If I Had Muscular Dystrophy?" -- the article in which he imagined putting himself in "that chair, that steel imprisonment that long has been deemed the dystrophic child's plight" (he was talking about a wheelchair) and going on to proclaim that if you have a disability, you can be only "half a person"?...

"When he spotted these activists in the audience that were in the front row in their wheelchairs, he even went so far as to say, 'These people are going to walk out of those chairs and drive home tonight. I bought those chairs for them,' " said witness John Gabrysiak.

Eurghh. But wait, there's more!:

http://www.raggededgemagazine.com/extra/jerrylewis052401.htm

Responding to CBS News Sunday Morning Correspondent Martha Teichner's question about protesters, Lewis spit, "I'm telling people about a child in trouble! If it's pity, we'll get some money. I'm just giving you facts!" Barely pausing, he added, "Pity? you don't want to be pitied because you're a cripple in a wheelchair, stay in ya house!"

I mean, really, it's just over, Jerry. Maybe they could see if Carrot Top is available for next year, or maybe Gallagher. :P

121. So far there is zilch confirmation that he made anti-war comments at the telethon.
There is only the OP of the thread you referenced who provided the quotes. .
Still waiting & hoping it's true.

124. How about one single mention of it anywhere other than DU?
Seems like a reasonable request. And again, I hope it's true.

128. FYI, an "anti-gay" slur is by definition a reaffirmation of gay rights
I think the title should be a "gay slur."

An "Anti-gay slur" is a double negative, in the case of the article.

A true 'anti-gay slur" would likely insult people like Fred Phelps and the ilk.

149. Calm Down, You Silly Gays!
Jerry Lewis is a good man who spoke out against the war! That means he's on our side on EVERYTHING! Also, he's raised millions of dollars for years fighting a disease, so if you attack him for insulting your community, you're REALLY saying that you hate crippled kids. Well, let me tell YOU something, Mr. and Ms. HO-MO-SEXUAL...anybody who hates crippled kids is a toilet sex loving pervert! From now on, keep you nasty little comments to yourself. We'll let you know if anything should be bothering you! Straight people are MUCH more level-headed, you know! AND we have a sense of humor!
