Rep. Paul Gillmor Found Dead At Home

(AP) WASHINGTON Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor was found dead in his apartment Wednesday, a Republican leadership aide said.

The aide said the body of the 68-year-old Republican was found by staff members who went to his apartment after he failed to show up for work. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death. Gillmor's office did not respond to a reporter's call.

Gillmor, who represented Ohio's 5th District in the Bowling Green area of the state, was first elected to Congress in 1988.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.

Remember that scene in Absolute Power where the Secret
Service guy was about to murder Luther's (Clint Eastwood's)
daughter, but Clint catches him in the act and sticks the
murder needle in the guy's artery instead?

Pleading for his life, the guy has the nerve to ask for
"Mercy...", but Clint's reply is "I'm fresh out".

Well, after being abused by Republicans since at least 1968,
so am I.

No quarter. No mercy. No remorse.

44. Same as everywhere else: special election
Article I, Section 2 (the part governing the House of Representatives) of the Constitution says "When vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies."

Though in this case I don't know if it matters: some of the counties in OH-5 went 70-percent for Bush in 2004. It's a very safe GOP seat.

Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 11:43 AM by WinkyDink
"Congressional career
In the U.S. House, Gillmor has a voting record that is generally: pro-life, pro-gun, anti-environmental, pro-business, pro-oil, pro-school vouchers and pro-"family values". Specifically, he has voted to make the Patriot Act permanent, against raising CAFE fuel economy standards, against protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling, has supported school prayer, supported a ban on gay adoption, supported a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and opposed embryonic stem cell research. <1>"

20. Aug 16 LTTE about Gillmore (Toledo Blade)
snip
(union rep says)

"After receiving no response to phone calls and e-mails on these topics, I attended a town meeting in Republic. Unfortunately, Mr. Gillmor's response was another politically correct apology for what happened to the workers of National Machinery. He also said he was unaware of the details.

However, we discovered that the bank involved in financing the new company had Mr. Gillmor on its board of directors. Furthermore, a member of the bank was present at the sale of the company's assets.

Mr. Gillmor said he doesn't have a "magic wand" to fix broken companies. We are not asking for that. We are asking him to do his part as a representative to support legislation protecting vulnerable workers."

Wal-Mart is deceptive, lawmaker says
He cites e-mail referring to full-service banking
By Lauren Coleman-Lochner and Alison Vekshin
Bloomberg News = March 16, 2007
http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660203596,00.html

Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s new leases with bank-branch tenants are "a smoking gun" that Congress should weigh as it considers a bill to ban the world's largest retailer from operating a bank, a lawmaker said.

"Wal-Mart's attempts to own a bank run opposite of their statements to Congress," U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor, a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, said at a news conference on Capitol Hill Thursday. "They demonstrate a clear pattern of deception."

Gillmor, who backs a bill to bar new nonfinancial companies from operating banks, cited an e-mail from Wal-Mart to its bank tenants that gave the retailer the right to make home-equity loans, install automated-teller machines and offer other financial services.

like many other GOP'ers, he became even more conservative after 2000. He often put his party's interest ahead of his constituents'. My perception, though, was that he wasn't an annoying, insulting, vindictive or rabid ideologue. Just quietly right wing.
