Some cat owners are furious after finding, what appears to be, recalled cat food still being sold at Wal-Mart. Although Wal-Mart denies the claim, an Action News I-Team investigation reveals new UPC stickers have been glued over old bar codes on recalled pet food packages

It could be just a price change, but don't trust Wal Mart.

1. Wal-mart's explanation for the new UPC codes on old packages seems a bit fishy.
They've proven so many times that they can't be trusted;
so I don't trust them.

2. NO IT COULDN'T! You DON'T change the UPC to change a price!
All you do is chang the price of that item in the store's computer system. I also hear this report last week on some news show here in Ga. Apparently WM couldn't get a reimbursement from the mfg. so they decided to counter the loss in a different way!

The story I heard was that a customer bought several of the same item, but tore the new UPC sticker off one of them. The ones with the new sticker on scanned just fine, but the one where she had removed the new sticker flashed a message on the register screen that said "DO NOT SELL. ITEM RECALLED"!

Sneaky greedy b'ds!!!!!!!

5. Well, I hope they lose a LOT of their customers because of this
deceptive practice! If they do it with cat food, how do you know they wouldn't do the same thing with human foods? I sure wouldn't trust them!

8. they won't. They've driven most small town business out of business.
In small town America, they are the only game in town.

17. Fortunately not in our small town

if they ever get a foothold on this mountain i swear I'm moving to Siberia.

They are in the towns at the foot of it, but I stay away as much as I can.

This is sickening.

22. Correct. The UPC code is designed to specify
a unique product. UPC's are created and assigned by the manufacturer. I don't see how Wal Mart, even as evil as they are, can change the UPC code without direction from or approval of the manufacturer...unless, they actually ARE the manufacturer or OWN the manufacturer.

10. They shouldn't even BE feeding canned cat food. It is a known
risk factor in the development of both hyperthyroidism and oral squamous cell carcinoma in cats.

Just my professional take on things.

21. I was told to add canned to my cat's diet.
She's older and had a bout with urine crystals a few years back. My vet told me to add more canned to her diet. That was wrong?

23. A top quality dry food will do the same thing. But more safely.
Science Diet, Max Cat, Costco's Kirkland, Purina Pro Plan (NOT the fish flavored one!)

24. We do Wellness for the kitty.
She gets dry Wellness once a day and a bit of canned (either ProPlan--using up a big box of the cans--or Wellness) twice a day. I was told to do it for the water content. She eats around the peas in the canned Wellness, which cracks me up, but she really likes it.

Just back from the vet, and she's gone from 13.5 lbs to 11lbs 12oz in just two years. Her allergies seem better on the Wellness, too, so that's good.

 Thank you for answering questions about a cat who isn't your patient. :)

26. I'm feeding Wellness Core (dry) to my little female Selkirk Rex - it's 50% protein,
along with being grain-free, and I mix that with dry Ultramix from Castor & Pollux. She had some IBS issues when I adopted her, and the symptoms have nearly disappeared.

12. On Its Face, The Walmart Explanation Sounds Likely.
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 09:13 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
One never knows for certain, of course, but they'd have to be the most brain dead company in the world to try and get away with such a thing. It just wouldn't seem remotely likely that they would be that stupid.

I'm sure this will be shown to be false.

13. You can't really sue them because you can't prove personal damage.
They have such a big monopoly, especially in small towns, people can't readily take their business elsewhere. Look at Microsoft. They can shit on their customers daily and it has little effect because many are locked in, or dependent on specific applications.

I have a friend who wants to go with Apple, but his software is platform dependent. Boot Camp, VMware, and Parallels could change that for him.
