Nat'l Security Archive Sues Bush Over Loss Of Millions Of E-Mails

White House sued again over e-mail
By PETE YOST
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- The White House abandoned an automatic archiving system for its e-mail in 2002 and did not replace it, says a lawsuit filed Wednesday against the Executive Office of the President.

The suit by the National Security Archive, a private group, is the latest effort to find out whether the Bush administration lost millions of electronic messages.

.............

"The period covers the period beginning with the Iraq war until the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; it doesn't get more historically valuable than that," said Tom Blanton, director of the private organization, which advocates public disclosure of government secrets.

The group's lawsuit filed under the Administrative Procedure Act seeks a federal court order directing the White House to recover any e-mails that were deleted from servers and that now exist only on backup tapes.

CREW FILES OPPOSITION BRIEF IN OFFICE OF ADMINISTRATION SUIT
http://www.citizensforethics.org/node/30038

4 Sep 2007 // Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed an opposition to the government’s motion for judgment on the pleadings in CREW v. Office of Administration (OA). OA has argued that it is not an agency subject to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) because it solely advises and assists the president. OA makes this argument in its response to CREW’s FOIA request for records that would document the White House’s knowledge of millions of missing email, its failure to restore the email or put in place an electronic record-keeping system that would prevent this problem, and the possibility that the email were purposefully deleted.

5. It's housed at George Washington University
If I remember correctly the funds that administers the archive's finances comes from donations from various foundations - like the Ford Foundation.

Here's the digital archive:

7. How did this one fall of the front page?
According to the article, the emails are not lost. They are on backup tapes. Not to mention the many that still reside on user's personal computers and PDAs - and on the server logs at Smartech.
