DU Often angers me, confuses me, amazes me and just now totally warmed the cockles of my heart!

I just found out that a fellow DU'r is an old associate from days gone by. Totally out of the blue! He has been a member for about 7 months less than i and here we have been, posting to the same website for several years not knowing who the other was.

This man was a patient mentor, a teacher, an ally, a man of generous humor who expressed kindness and selfless generosity when it was neither expected nor required. He helped me in a time of transition and for that he has my eternal gratitude.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes me continually come back to this website. Even though many of the members here have views that differ from mine on many subjects, and even though there have been unpleasant or acrimonious exchanges in the past, this episode reminds me, with the force of a waterfall of memories, just exactly how special this community is.

My fellow members of Democratic Underground, please don't for one second take for granted the incredible depth and variety of talent and compassion of this community. You might never know that the person you have passed only a few words with in your time here might just have made a dramatic difference in your personal life sometime in the past.

It's interesting that I post my heart out, and do so like no one is watching. I feel a sense of guilt in that I may not be deserving. After all, I have not nearly the same magnitude of political nor literate experience as most people on this forum. But I have an extremely powerful sense of who everyone is here. How they've lived their lives. What they have endured. What they know. I thought I'd be a hero when I found the internet. Then when I saw how similar we all are, I thought I'd drop out because I was not a unique and special person. Now I am genuinely glad to feel a sense of belonging. It's something I've never felt before. I am an outsider. I observe the world. It's all too much for me. Too threatening. Too many requirements. I owe everything to the people here. The learning we have all done together. We are all standing on each other's shoulders. It's wonderful.

Suffice to say, he responded to a post of mine on a thread, i responded back, he seconded and i PM'd him. Turns out we knew each other about 8 years ago.
