Mel Gibson Makes Church In Own Image: Requires Women To Wear Veils And Skirts.
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 10:26 PM by BlooInBloo
http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,23663,22363662-7485,00.html

"MEL Gibson has poured a further $10 million into his controversial sect in the Malibu hills as he oversees the construction of a 400-seat church to expand his flock of followers.

A federal tax filing reveals that the troubled actor-director made the large lump sum donation earlier this year to his Holy Family Catholic Church, which is situated in the secluded Agoura Hills.

The private church now has $37 million in its coffers - up from $27 million last year, according to the tax document.

Gibson's secretive sect is not recognised by the Roman Catholic Church because it does not acknowledge the authority of the Pope or the Vatican and rejects the universally accepted teachings of the Second Vatican Council.

The church - which offers a daily morning mass in Latin - follows an antiquated ideology of Catholicism dating back to the 16th century.

Female followers of Gibson's church must abide by a strict dress code, requiring them to wear veils over their hair and long skirts, with a ban on pants for women. "

(They're one-sentence grafs - hopefully that doesn't break posting rules.)

Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 10:43 PM by kestrel91316
I wouldn't exactly call Agoura Hills "secluded", lol, since it sits right along the 101 freeway. It's billboard hell, and lots of McMansions on tiny lots. And of course the obligatory "estates" (bigger McMansions on big lots) tucked into the hills.

Is he gonna plunk that thing down on Roadside Drive, maybe renovate Whizins???? LOL

On edit - the address (from a 2002 article in the Acorn):

69. I attended the Faire there...when I was 10 -14.
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 09:30 PM by LWolf
That dates me. I lived a little further out, in T.O., for about 18 months between 11 and 12. I could ride my horse from my house to Westlake without ever finding a fence or a development.

Some friends of my mom's rode their horses to the fair in Agoura from Calabasas one year, and camped once they got there.

I didn't spend any time in Agoura outside of the Faire. IRC, I passed by or near on the 101 frequently on my to the beach; there was an offramp to a road that led to the coast.

When someone says "Agoura," I don't picture what it looks like in the 21st century. I picture fields, a tree-lined creek, frogs in that creek, turkey legs, artichokes, corn on the cob, head shop booths, the customers of said booths, and the general fair background.

:hippie:

73. Well, picture freeway, billboards, tacky shopping centers, and endless
suburban tract homes of the 80s. They have managed to preserve the Chesebro Canyon park, and it joins up with the Ahmanson Ranch property for a nice chunk of oak savannah that is home to golden eagles yet.

4. Well when I grew up you had to wear a hat to church and cover
your arms. Few women wore slacks and none to church I am sure. We used to laugh as my mother liked Western riding pants and boats and wore them just about every place and believe me in Maine in the early 40's that was odd. She looked great. I say as long as you do not hang out any place wear what you want. What is it will Mel any how? Lost his cool I guess. One of these people who makes a lot of money so he thinks he is smart I guess.

39. You sort of dress to wards what the custom is.
I lived in Saudi and put on a long wrap and sort of covered my hair. It was their country after all. Besides that the long big robes are very cool as you can wear what you want under them. I still find it odd that their are signs on doors of business to say what you can wear if you come into the store. You would think people would just know those things. I will say I was sure glad my mother was modern enough not to put us into those very bad pink stocking that girls were just getting out of wearing that were held up by some type harness. They were cotton and just bad. We were so lucky as we shopped a lot in Can. so we had all these great knee socks from Eng. So much for the up tight 30's and 40's I guess.

is also in Agoura Hills.

Interestingly, it also has a dress code:

Ashram students and visitors should dress modestly. Female visitors, please avoid wearing sleeveless dresses, sleeveless blouses, halter tops, and shorts. While in the mandir building, ladies must wear a shawl or a wrap around their shoulders. Males, females and children over the age of 10 may not wear shorts above knee length.

19. To understand it, Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus
Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus

This basically means that outside the church there is no salvation. It's a dogma that many who practice Catholic traditionalism believe in. You have to understand that Gibson's father is/was a "Sedevacant", Sedevacantism being the belief that all popes after the late 1950s have veered so far away from traditional catholicism (which remained relatively unchanged for centuries previous, are heretics for the changes they made. Traditionalist Catholism, practiced by a small minority of catholics including Gibson, basically believe the church should return to the days before the Vatican Council of 1962 and practice mass exactly as Gibson's new church is practicing it now.

28. I love skirts
I most always wear them but they definitely attract more attention. Some women just aren't comfortable with the attention, pants are more modest wear. I don't understand why these religious fanantics and arch-conservatives push the skirts instead of the more modest and conservative coverage of pants. I like skirts, I'm more comfortable in them but people should wear what they want as long as they still look decent and respectable.

54. One word: BUTTOCKS
You can see the outline of your derriere with pants, whereas with skirts (most of the time) it's covered up.

So (IMHO) it's supposed to be more of a deterrent to keep people from looking at your a**.

63. I'm guessing that the skirts are longer than knee length and therefore modest
in comparison, because skirts don't emphasize the crotch at all and most skirts do a good job at diminishing the outline of the butt too, and while legs can be a turn on, they're not so much as the other spots. I'm betting that low-cut blouses and visible nipples are outside of the dress code too.

52. Skirts and veils. What about their sugar tits? Blue drapes maybe?
I think since Ashy left the DOJ there might be some extra material laying around. Mel's crazier than a shit house rat. :eyes:

57. Somehow this is all going to end in a mass suicide.
I just don't know if it'll be a castration/kool-aid party, or a self-immolation during a shoot-out with federal agents.

61. Guilt
It's probably a maligned quilt reaction to his own debauched lifestyle of boozing and womanizing, mixed up with his catholic upbringing. He reckons he can buy his redemption.

An old kibbutz mate who was a jew and going to be a rock star is now a noecon redneck cop. He told me he's now studying to be a pastor. I'm wondering if it's the same mind set.

71. I guess he likes that part of the taliban.
Isn't it ironic that he played the lead role in "What Women Want"?

77. Gibson is the epitomy of what organized patriarchal religions inflict on young children . .. .
I think it's a kind of brain damage --

Mel Gibson seems to have gotten an inordinate amount of brainwashing with his father's
obsessed beliefs in Catholicism and anti-Jewish fervor --

I don't think he'll ever pull out of it --

A good argument against the idea of having young children pushed into religion before the age of reason, at least -- and IMO they should have total freedom of conscience and make up their own minds at age 18 or 21 about their own views on spirituality vs organized religions.
