Bush At APEC Summit: This is Your Brain On Drugs: Any Questions?
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 05:33 AM by RestoreGore
If you aren't embarrassed to be an American citizen yet, you haven't been paying attention. And get the last line of this article wherein his aides describe his obvious behavior from either drugs, alcohol, or the residual mind numbing effects of snorting cocaine as "folksy" and "endearing to Middle America." Oh God, there goes that vomit taste in my mouth again. He sure knows what he is doing when he is condoning and ordering torturing and maiming people and lying to them.

Bush shows gift of gaffe at APEC summit Fri Sep 7, 12:23 AM ET

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Even for someone as gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush, he was in rare form on Friday, confusing APEC with OPEC and transforming Australian troops into Austrians.

Bush's tongue started slipping almost as soon as he started talking at a business forum on the eve of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Sydney.

"Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction," he told Prime Minister John Howard. "Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit."

As the audience of several hundred people erupted in laughter, Bush corrected himself and joked, "He invited me to the OPEC summit next year." Australia has never been a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Later in his speech, Bush recounted how Howard had gone to visit "Austrian troops" last year in Iraq. There are, in fact, no Austrian troops there. But Australia has about 1,500 Australian military personnel in and around the country.

Upon finishing his speech, Bush took the wrong way off-stage and, looking slightly perplexed, had to be re-directed by Howard to a centre-stage exit.

But not before a veteran White House correspondent seized the opportunity to ask Bush whether there had been any new message in his speech. Apparently misunderstanding the question, he bristled and asked, "Haven't you been listening to my past speeches?" before turning away.

Bush's sometimes muddled syntax and mispronunciation of words like nuclear ("nukular") have long been fodder for late-night TV comedians. But aides say his folksy style has helped endear him to Middle America.

2. Oh my! This is not the least bit funny or endearing.
It is horrifying and it's an insult to "middle America" to suggest that this kind of behavior endears the man to any thinking human being. Every once and awhile (quite frequently lately) I read something about him and say to myself "we're really screwed". This is one of those times.:scared:

4. Which reminds me. Maybe its just me but doesn't he say "tourists" when he means to say "terrorists"?
Nukular might be funny but on more than one occasion I could swear I heard him speak about the tourist threat.

I've never heard anyone else mention this, so maybe its just me.

Anyway, as a long-term Middle American, I for one am not endeared. It wasn't enough that we had to be embarrassed as a nation but now they're gonna single us out as the ones who encourage this crap? Thanks a lot.

5. "But aides say his folksy style.........
has helped endear him to Middle America". :banghead:

Which confirms my opinion that "Middle America" is comprised of total idiots who don't have even a rudimentary understanding of our government, the world, or the issues concerning them. Just as long as that person has "folksy style" our country is in good hands. :puke:

Oh, and they have to hate gay people too. We can't forget that. "Family values" are SOOOOOO important! :banghead:

8. In this context, Middle America isn't so much a geographic location
as a group of people. People who, sadly, do not have even a basic education, though most have at least a high school diploma and many have degrees from a real university. They are functional illiterates who can't locate Austria or Australia on a map.

They say things like "dang", "ain't", and "not 'nuthin". The height of comedic genius is Larry the Cable Guy.

And there are a lot of them. Sometimes they even get on television, like Miss Teen South Carolina, or on Leno when he is doing his "Jay Walking" skit.

And they think its just dandy that someone like them is President, not one of those elite snobs who really "don't know nuthin bout how the world really works", the elites that have better jobs and make more money, money which is out of their reach now because the decent paying jobs for people with their intellectual skills and education have evaporated, sent overseas by their "hero" and his buddies. But, as long as they can shop at Walmart and keep the rent paid on the trailer home, things are fine.

And right now, I'm living in the middle of them (rural Arizona) and it's about to drive me insane.

But that ad was extremely stupid and bigoted.

It essentially implied than anyone who used a drug other than alcohol or tobacco was brain damaged.

A magazine I read stopped running that ad back in the mid 80's after a LTTE made that point and then ran an editorial explaining why.
