Be Careful For Those Of U Who Use File-Sharing; Indictment Highlights File-Sharing Risks
Indictment Highlights File-Sharing Risks

From: Slashdot

from the careful-what-you-share dept.
Security The Internet

Bomarc writes "Via the KOMO-TV website, an article from the Associated Press about how Gregory Thomas Kopiloff used Limewire, Soulseek and other peer-to-peer file-sharing programs to troll other computers for financial information, which he used to open credit cards for an online shopping spree, according to a four-count indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court on Thursday. The news article isn't big on details, but it does outline the risks with peer-to-peer file-sharing programs."

1. Anybody still doing pier-to-pier file sharing is nuts.
Especially if the big reason is getting music or movies for free.

4. Nitpick
A pier is a platform built out into the water that boats can load and unload onto.

A peer (in context of computers) is one point of a point-to-point connection used for exchanging data.

2. On Soulseek, that would happen only if one accidentally forgot
to set specifically which folder(s) one is sharing.

3. Anyone using file sharing with the settings
"share ALL files" is a total idiot in the first place. Most people accept the default settings on any software install without checking the settings-this isn't too smart even without file sharing.
