***1st weekly GOOD NEWS Roundup!***
Welcome to the first weekly installment of the Good News Roundup!

All too often it seems like we get overwhelmed by bad news. Good things happen to though. This thread is intended as a place to post and discuss all of the good news that has happened in the last week.

I'd like to encourage everyone to post any good news - whether it's political or personal - here. I'll start:

Just 39% Believe Iraq Report Will Honestly Present Petraeus Views; 35% Say It Will Not
Wednesday, September 05, 2007
Advertisment

General David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, will be issuing a formal progress report on the situation in Iraq next week. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 45% of American voters expect a positive report while 24% expect the opposite. Thirty-one percent (31%) are not sure.

However, just 39% believe the report will honestly and accurately reflect the General’s true assessment of the situation in Iraq. Thirty-five percent (35%) say it will not while 26% are not sure.

As with all polling questions on the topic of Iraq, there is a sharp divide along partisan lines. Republicans, by a 62% to 14% margin, expect a positive report. Democrats are evenly divided with 34% anticipating a positive report and 31% with the opposite view. Forty-two percent (42%) of those not affiliated with either major party say the report will be positive and 25% of unaffiliateds say negative.
By a 58% to 22% margin, Republicans expect the report to honestly reflect the views of Petraeus. Just 25% of Democrats share that assessment while 43% say the report will not accurately reflect what Petraeus thinks. Unaffiliateds are evenly divided.

Judge strikes down part of Patriot Act

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A provision of the Patriot Act that requires people who are formally contacted by the FBI for information to keep it a secret is unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled on Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero sided with the American Civil Liberties Union, which brought the lawsuit and argued that an FBI letter requesting information -- called a National Security Letter -- is effectively a gag order but without the authorization of a judge.

The FBI tells people who receive the letters to keep them secret, but recipients can challenge the secrecy order in court under a 2006 congressional amendment to the NSL law.

The law says judges must defer to the FBI's view that secrecy is necessary, undermining the judiciary's check on the power of the executive branch, the ACLU said.

Conservative ‘Club’ Clipped by Big FEC Fine

Citizens Club for Growth Inc., a highly visible conservative activist organization, agreed to pay a $350,000 penalty to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for failing to register with the agency as a political committee and report its contributions and expenditures.

The group, which has recently undergone a reorganization, is one of a number of groups that organized with the Internal Revenue Service under Section 527 of the tax code primarily to conduct “issues advocacy,” but have drawn loud criticisms for running independent advertising during political campaigns that appeared clearly aimed at persuading viewers to vote for or (more often) against a candidate — a form of electioneering communication that comes under the regulatory purview of the FEC and the fundraising limitations under federal campaign finance laws.

The Club for Growth has been involved in dozens of congressional campaigns, and received considerable attention during the 2004 Republican Senate primary contest in Pennsylvania when the group sought to discredit the incumbent, GOP moderate Arlen Specter, as insufficiently conservative. Then-Rep. Patrick J. Toomey, the Club-backed candidate who came within 2 percentage points of upsetting Specter, is now the president of Club for Growth.

The agreement announced Wednesday would end a pending court case between the two parties, and if the deal is approved, it would be the largest civil penalty the FEC ever collected after an enforcement case has moved to litigation.

Please keep kicked by contributing your own good news and comments!

Happy Friday everyone! :hi:

5. Dems Surge In Ohio, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds

Dems Surge in Ohio

September 6, 2007 - Clinton Opens Lead Over Giuliani As Dems Surge In Ohio, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Little Unity Among Republicans

Ohio, the key state in the 2004 presidential election, is turning blue in the 2008 campaign, with Democratic candidates winning 11 of 12 matchups with Republican contenders, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, the Democratic front-runner has opened a 47 - 40 percent lead over her GOP counterpart, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, up from a 43 - 43 percent tie in an August 8 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

-snip-

"The only one of the dozen match ups between the leading candidates on both sides of the aisle in which a Republican came out ahead was Sen. McCain who held a statistically insignificant 42 - 41 percent lead over Sen. Obama.

"We have been seeing a gradual shift toward the Democrats in Ohio this year, but these numbers show that the tide has turned in this traditionally Republican-leaning state. Of course we have 14 months until the election, but at this point the Republicans are playing catch-up in a state they would be very hard pressed to win the White House without."

Some more good news!

6. Dems Hold 18 Point Advantage in Generic Congressional Ballot: Rasmussen

Congressional Ballot

Democrats have opened an eighteen point lead in the Generic Congressional ballot. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that, if the Congressional Election were held today, 50% of American voters say they would vote for the Democrat in their district. Just 32% would opt for the Republican. A month ago, the Democrats lead was just ten percentage points, 47% to 37%.

Republicans now trail by 15 percentage points among men. Last month, they were nearly even with Democrats among male voters. Democrats now have a twelve-point advantage among white voters, another segment of the population that was a toss-up in early August.

Prior to reaching the 50% level in September, support for Democrats had stayed in the 45% to 47% range for six consecutive monthly surveys.

Before dropping to 32% this month, support for Republicans had ranged from 34% to 38% over that same six month period.

Senate Passes Bill Raising College Aid

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 7, 2007

Filed at 11:03 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate voted Friday to increase college financial aid by cutting roughly $20 billion in government subsidies to banks and giving it to students.

The bill would boost the maximum Pell grant, which goes to the poorest college students, from $4,310 to $5,400 by 2012.

The vote was 79-12.

The House is expected to vote on the bill later Friday and the president is expected to sign the legislation soon.

12. This is good news!
I hadn't heard about this legislation.

I think it's crucial for us to invest in our future. College tuition has become a big hurdle for too many Americans! I hope this will also help those of us deep in tuition-debt. Based on the article it's hard to tell for sure if it will be retroactively applied.

This line in particular caught my eye since I'm a recent grad with a nursing degree:

The bill also sets up a loan-forgiveness program for college graduates who work for 10 years in public service professions, such teaching or nursing.

27. FEC Won't Regulate Political Blogging
From Commie Pinko Dirtbag's post earlier this week: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2980053

WASHINGTON (AP) - DailyKos, an influential political Web site that serves as a virtual bulletin board for liberals, qualifies as a media entity exempt from federal campaign finance regulations, the Federal Election Commission said Tuesday.

The FEC said the Web site, operated by blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, cannot be regulated as a political committee and can freely post blog entries that support candidates.

Conservative blogger John C.A. Bambenek had argued in a complaint last month that the site should comply with campaign finance laws because such entries amounted to ``a gift of free advertising and candidate media services.''

The FEC disagreed.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1759280 (OP by flashl)

Challenging Corporate Power: California Community Says Companies Are Not People; Bans Campaign Donations

Humboldt County, California, became the latest, and largest, jurisdiction to abolish the legal doctrine known as "corporate personhood."

Measure T was successful because our all-volunteer campaign came together to pass a law that bans non-local corporations from participating in Humboldt elections. The referendum, which passed with 55 percent of the vote, also asserts that corporations cannot claim the First Amendment right to free speech.

29. Helped a boy be placed in a school that would help him
I work in a community that lives in extreme poverty - like so extreme that they have no running water or sewer lines and many don't have electricty. Anyway one boy who lives in the community was kicked out of school the 2nd day of school - and the school district really didn't offer him an alternative. I received in the mail a random newsletter from an area Children's Attention Home and they were talking about the charter school that they have. I called up the Director/Principal and talked about our community and the special needs that these kids need and within two days the teenager was heading to this new school and he came home with a smile that first day.

Felt really good. People, the school district, his mother had given up on this kid. I felt like I did more this week than many politicians may have.

44. Great idea and another good news story-
Congress Approves Student Loan Bill

WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 — Congress gave final approval to a broad overhaul of federal student loan programs today, sharply cutting subsidies to lenders and increasing grants to needy students.

In quick succession, both the House and Senate approved the changes, allowing Democrats to say they had made good on one of their campaign promises last year to ease the strain of rising college costs. In the Senate, the bill passed 79 to 12, reflecting broad bipartisan support. In the House it passed in a voice vote, after which a 292-to-97 roll-call vote was taken.

The Education Secretary, Margaret Spellings, said that she was recommending that President Bush sign the bill because it “answered the president’s call to significantly increase funding” for Pell grants for low-income students. The administration had issued a veto threat against an earlier House version of the legislation.

Maybe it was because I was in my 20's, but it seemed like everyone was happier back then. Since 2000 it seems like everyone is either pissed off or plain stupid, and every day it gets worse.

I can't wait until every day brings good news. Humanity can't survive otherwise.

57. Thank you so much. This goes a long way to keep my blood pressure down in the normal range.
