5. Oh no.
RIP Madeleine L'Engle and thank you.

That was the book that made a reader out of me as a child. I read it to my kids and will occasionally pull it out to look over again.

13. Oh....wow.
It's funny. To me she is an icon and an amazing thinker. To you she's your dad's friend. Did I already say I was jealous?

Even tho I am a lot older than those the books were written for, I still enjoy them.

12. Oh, I am crying. Here's the NYT obit:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/08/books/07cnd-lengle.html?_r=1&oref=slogin&ref=books&pagewanted=print

Her books saved my soul when I was going through the trauma known as junior high. She did more to expand my thinking than any high school or university class I ever took.

14. I liked the perfect little family of awkward but brainy kids. Instant readership goldmine!
:D

But hey, kudos to her for combining time travel, math, and biology in a really fascinating way.

16. RIP Ms L'Engle and thank you
Well, she is with her beloved husband Hugh now. I had the pleasure of meeting her many years ago at a book fair in NYC. A friend of mine from college had been a student at St. Hilda and St. Hugh's School when she taught there and I mentioned his name to her. She remembered him instantly and wanted to be brought up to date on him and his family, which I did. She was a very kind and gracious lady.

He was an actor on All My Children, iirc.

19. This is very sad... Very sad.

Reading her book, A Wrinkle In Time, really started me on the path of being a passionate and more analytical reader and thinker. I can rightly say that it is part of the reason of some of my core beliefs... Part of the reason as to why I am so committed to liberal politics and I renounce the insipid illogical views of the political and social right.

I see a lot of deaths posted on here, but this is one of the rare occasions that I feel like it is a real lost. It's too bad that her official site has not updated yet to reflect her passing. She will be missed.

20. I heard her speak at Duke University in 1992.
I was a senior at the School of Science & Math in Durham, and my sister was a student at Duke.
L'Engle was speaking at the Duke Chapel. I can't remember the substance of her talk but one line stuck in my head.
It was, paraphrased: Fundamentalists who believe in a wrathful God are truly bizarre because they pray for God to save them from .. Himself.

RIP Madeleine.

RIP, you wonderful woman.

I read recently that L'Engle could not get Wrinkle in Time published, even tho she knew it was a great book by her own children's response to it. Finally, someone published it as a favor, and the rest is history.

I was saddened when I saw this today. Her books made a big impact on me when I was a preteen. I should check out her adult books - don't think I"ve read any.
