Did you all know we have welfare queens in Houston?
Check out this post from a Chronicle reader:

ncray..I am not so sure about these folks being poor. I think the rent money goes on rims and gin & juice! I was in line behind a lady at Fiesta and we both walked out of the store at the same time. She paid with WIC and the Lone Star card and got into her Mercedes. Just because they live in a run down area doesn't make them poor, just foolish with their money.

Personally, I think she's lying through her teeth!

1. Not all black people are poor. Some of them can afford luxury cars.

If it is true this person paid with WIC and drove off in a brand new Mercedes, that's probably an issue issue for fraud investigators. However, it's all hearsay at this point, so take it with a grain of salt.

9. Yeah, I guess when we hear Mercedes, we think of the newer more expensive style.
It could have been an old used Mercedes. Of course, the poster wouldn't mention that.

3. When I worked at a Harris Teeter we busted a rich couple who were getting Food Stamps for their dogs
That's right. They drove up in a 50,000 car and got out and came in and bought steaks for their dogs with Food Stamps. Something didn't add up and we called the police. You can get into a lot of trouble for defrauding the government.

5. Back when they used to issue stamps rather than use cards
There were some incidents of people who would sell the stamps to get money for things that they couldn't purchase with them.

I would think that isn't possible now.

14. I know!
Dishwashing liquid, laundry soap, paper towels...it used to amaze me the items I needed but could not purchase with those damned stamps. True confession time, I used to pay my babysitter with a trip to the market once a month. Shhhh. ;)

15. The horror!
They should use scavenged newspaper and learn to live with dirty hair!

Is this even needed? :sarcasm:

7. Well, that's an improvement on the Cadillac story of old.
Which was total BS, as this one probably is too.

Even if it's not, how did this woman know it was her car?

In Texas, the welfare payment is roughly 260.00 for the single parent of one child. The food stamp payment is another 260.00. HUD pays no more than 400.00 per month and WIC gives out only vouchers for foodstuffs like cheese, cereal and milk. In addition, whereas a parent can buy items like soda and candy on the Lone Star card, they most certainly cannot buy liquor or beer. Plus, the poster did not mention the age of this supposed Mercedes or whether or not the woman was driving of a passenger.

Also, there is no proof that the Lone Star card had anything to do with receiving food stamps. That card could just as easily been payments received through state-enforced child support payments.

10. This is urban legend of long standing, always claimed by every
right wing moran you will ever meet.

They ought to be personally escorted to the living quarters of people on welfare and learn firsthand what it is like to be poor.
