I first turn attention to excerpts from a plot summary of the 1984 BBC nuclear war dramatization "Threads" (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads):

In the film, prior to the outbreak of all-out nuclear war, "the Soviet Union has invaded Iran following a coup, and the United States, with British support, has begun to intervene militarily." As international tensions escalate, the government ends up rounding up and imprisoning all potential dissident elements.
