Breaking: Petraeus: "It has not worked out as we had hoped."
by Brandon Friedman
Fri Sep 07, 2007

General David Petraeus, in anticipation of the release of his (or the White House’s) report next week, has just issued a letter to the troops in Iraq. In the letter (of which I’ve obtained a copy), he essentially says what everyone expects him to say. However, he made one comment that I found rather striking considering the circumstances: On the second page, with regard to "tangible political progress" on the ground and "national reconciliation," Petraeus says, "It has not worked out as we had hoped."

I’ve included screen shots of the letter below. I'm not sure if this is up on the web anywhere yet.

for the rest of the letter go to:

1. Faith-based military strategy: "It has not worked out as we had *hoped*."
"Hoped"?

I'd "hope" to win a football pool at work, or "hope" for it to not rain when I need to be outside. Hope is all you have when you can't control a situation. Oh, my!: maybe he's right on the money and telling the truth.

In any event, I sure would have rather seen "planned"/"anticipated"/"prepared" or some other proactive, action-oriented word than "hoped".

Is this really all we have in the strategic planning arsenal?

2. bushco and the rest were never serious -- and they are congenitally cynical.
the u.s. had to take the place of what were the security forces in iraq -- ignoring that it was an illegal invasion in the first place.

they can lie and make things up as they will as a result their cynical attitiudes.

the u.s. broke iraq -- and they neglected to do all that was necessary to secure and repair what they broke.

3. Incredibly, the first example of what did not work as hoped is THE OIL LAW.

5. Ya
even with a puppet gov't and 160,000 hostile soldiers in place, they couldn't get a semi-legal piece of paper out of them handing their oil over.

I have to say, I'm proud of those people.

We are, in short, a long way from the goal line, but we do have the ball and we are driving down field.
