Great News!
I've now received a contract for my next novel, the second in my Infinity: Prime series. It's entitled "Death of Heroes," and involves a team of operatives sent back in time to prevent a world-destroying war between super-powered individuals and ordinary humans.

It's about civil liberties and those willing to fight for them, as well as how strange (and mysterious) forces can shape public policy. Like all of my books, it's full of high-speed action, striking characters, and insights into what I believe is the ultimate nature of humanity.

Today or tomorrow I should be getting my copies of the first book in the series, "Sword and Shadow" in the mail. I'm looking forward to holding it in my hand.

Some of you might remember I was a little worried that my political outspokenness might have scared off my publisher. I'm glad to say that it isn't the case at all. And I think I have DU to thank for that, at least to some extent. I know that some DUers have ordered a few copies and I'm hoping that trend will continue. I'd like to think my outspokenness is a good thing for my career in the long run.

At least the Freepers are bound to hate me. I don't deal with their ilk very gently in my books. I do not tread lightly over the issues of hypocrisy, hate speech, or religious fanaticism. But in them, the targets of their hatred are no longer members of ordinary human minorities, but paranormal and preternatural creatures such as metahumans, lycanthropes, and vampires. Still human, with human desires, fears, and foibles, but a threat to the ascendency of "normal" human-kind.

But, as I say, they're free to purchase and burn as many copies as they like.

This will be my seventh published novel.

1. Ummm, In Your Book Will There Be A Sequence...
in which super-powered individuals, or normal folks for that matter, are asked to show their receipt of purchase and refuse? If there isn't then there ougtta be. It's golden!

Oh and congratulations, I just started watching "Heroes" and your description is intriguing. When will the fist book hit store shelves?

5. We're still trying to get the chain stores to carry it
in inventory. You can order it THROUGH borders, or Amazon.com, or Target.com, but so far it's not in any of the stores physically, that I know of.

13. Final Draft.
After being kicked off of a plane for wearing outfits that show their cooters, super powered individuals (or normal folk)hit the duty-free shop for some cheap Stoly. While leaving they are asked to show their receipts, refuse, and war ensues.

NYTBS for sure.

9. are they sent back from a future that was created by the war?
Just wondering. Time travel opens the door to a lot of logical questions and debate.

14. Actually, no...
They're sent back from an entirely different future, a different timeline where that didn't happen at all. In 2012, on the Earth THEY'RE from, Democrat Lynn Mendoza, the first female and first Hispanic President, a friend to the paranormal and preternatural, was elected as POTUS. Partially thanks to her heroic policies, there was something of a coalition to defend Earth when the alien Cen invaded some years later.

My books are based on the many worlds theory...there are an infinite number of possible Earths--some very similar to ours, some so different as to be unrecognizable. After the Cen war, a group migrated to a sidereal dimension, a place not in the continuum at all, and organized a society dedicated to the preservation and protection of sentients throughout the known metaverse...on all the alternate Earths.

Meanwhile, back on the Earth from which they came, mankind moved out into the stars under the direction of a powerful immortal leader.

I've currently got three series going... Infinity: Earth, which deals with the Earth of our time, more or less. Infinity: Prime, which deals with the society described above, and Infinity: Empire, which deals with the future Earth in that universe.

43. Thanks...
My mind is always spinning. Aggravating at times. Like when I wake up too early when the muse is upon me and have to get up and start writing even if I've only had a few hours sleep. Makes for some LONG days on occasion.

Of course I go through periods where it just isn't flowing...the ideas are there, but the words don't come as easily as they might.

That's aggravating too.

12. How do you deal with "the grandfather paradox"?
If you travel back in time and kill your grandfather or prevent your grandparents from meeting, you prevent yourself from ever having been born and traveling back in time...

Probably my favorite time travel book is an oldie, "Time and Again", by Jack Finney.

16. That sort of thing causes a timeline branch...
The universe from which you originated still exists, but you wouldn't then exist in the branch that results from your action.

It creates a new universe, basically.

22. It took me a while to wrap my head fully around Back to the Future, for example
But Back to the Future II explained this fully, perhaps better than they intended.

They talk about Biff giving his youngerself the almanac, and how it created an alternate 1985 which seemed alternate to them but perfectly normal to everyone else.

Then if you think about it, when Marty arrives back home in the first movie, he is arriving in yet another alternate 1985, one in which his father actually stands up for himself. To Marty it is different, but to everyone else it is normal.

21. Well I don't know how he handles it but.......
That is one of the beauties of the "multiple realities" theory. It eliminates this paradox by creating alternate timelines whenever a cusp event (such as killing your grandfather) occurs, thus dispelling any contradiction.

It's an oft used sci-fi concept. I'm not tired of it yet though, looking forward to Mythsaje's series.

24. One of the things I try to do is eliminate mysticism
from fantasy. My magic is based on pseudo-science instead. The "Gods," are really immortals who pretended to be Gods. Mankind lost magic due to a series of nanoviruses introduced into the population by the alien Cen, who were softening up this Earth for future invasion, and the immortal Loki screwed up their plans by reversing the damage and introducing another series of viruses that changed the human genome in astounding ways.

23. You ever seen the time travel episode of Futurama. They addres it nicely
Edited on Fri Sep-07-07 03:52 PM by ComerPerro
Fry witnesses his grandfather get killed in a nuclear test. He comforts the widow (he figures if he is still alive, then that wasn't actually his grandfather) and sleeps with her, but in the morning realizes to his horror that it is in fact his grandmother.

Great scene follows where Fry insists, "but if that's my grandmother, who's my grandfather" and Professor Farnsworth yells something like "Isn't it obvious? You are!!!!"

Of course, that episode has another epic moment where the Planet Express ship assualts the US Air Force to rescue Bender, and as they dive bomb in and shoot up aircraft the Professor yells "Choke on that, causality!"

25. How wonderful!!
You are my hero. My first novel (for teens) comes out in March and a second will follow in 2009. I'm now working on a fantasy for ages 10-14 that includes two worlds (and I won't describe them here -- don't want to jinx it).My agent read the first draft and said, "Wow, you certainly have a familiar political undercurrent here."
I asked, a bit nervously, "Is that bad?"
"No," he said. "Not at all. It's about time."

31. Congratulations...
I love sci fi, but I really can't ever get into those "sent back into the past to save the future" plots. If the whole plot unfolds in the past, wouldn't the protagonists already know the outcome? If they're able to organize a fight in the present, doesn't any victory by their enemies in the past really not matter?

33. It's not THEIR past...
It's the past of a different universe, a different Earth entirely.

Time travel is actually against immortal law, but the big boss breaks the law to save a whole world. Or, at least, thinks it's worth a try.

44. I've tried very hard to do something different...
I don't think it's possible to read my stuff and say "this is a lot like ______." As far as I know, it's not like anyone's. Which, at times, makes it a little difficult to explain it to someone who asks, "well, what's it about?"

I just try to send them to my website. It's the best way to get a grasp on the universe as a whole.
