DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful John McCain criticized Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Friday, calling his government a disappointment.
The Arizona senator said he was committed to keeping U.S. troops in Iraq as long as necessary and criticized Democrats for pushing for a deadline to bring soldiers home. He added, however, that any military success must be accompanied by strong leadership from elected Iraqi officials. He said the al-Maliki government has "not been functioning effectively" to suppress sectarian divisions and violence.
"We expect them to act more effectively or (get) another parliamentary government," he told the California Chamber of Commerce board of directors. "And I'm not advocating the overthrow of the Maliki government, but I am pointing out that they are a parliamentary system and they obviously choose their leaders."
