Is it Friday again? Time for the weekly news dump?

It appears so. Let's see, a report released today by retired Marine General James Jones said that Iraq's military is at least 12-18 months away from assuming combat duties from US soldiers, while its police force is so corrupt that it should be disbanded. As a result the report suggests that the US military should cut its presence in Iraq to look less like an "occupying force."

And leaked information from next week's Petraeus report confirms the lack of readienss on the Iraqi security front, and adds that Iraqi leaders have failed to make satisfactory progress on the political reconciliation the so-called "surge" was designed to facilitate.

Not a very encouraging picture.

Back here in Mother America things aren't so great, either. According to Forbes, "The Labor Department said Friday morning that employment decreased by 4,000 in August. The decline was the first since 2003, a sharp fall from a month ago and a wide miss on expectations. . . Weak job growth is a worrisome sign because it indicates a slowing economy. It also puts more strain on U.S. consumers. Consumers are already dealing with the credit effects of declining home values and are encountering obstacles in finding loans. They are also feeling the pinch as swelling food and energy costs tighten budgets."
