Giuliani: Illegal Immigration No Crime
Giuliani: Illegal Immigration No Crime

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said illegal immigration is not a crime, prompting rival Mitt Romney to accuse him of not taking the problem seriously. The two have clashed for weeks over illegal immigration, an issue that inflames GOP conservatives who influence primary elections. The irony is that both candidates have in the past taken more liberal stands on the issue.

"It's not a crime," Giuliani said Friday. "I know that's very hard for people to understand, but it's not a federal crime."

Giuliani's comments came in an interview with CNN Headline News and radio talk-show host Glenn Beck.

"I was U.S. attorney in the Southern district of New York," he said. "So believe me, I know this. In fact, when you throw an immigrant out of the country, it's not a criminal proceeding. It's a civil proceeding."

Illegal immigration shouldn't be a crime, either, Giuliani said: "No, it shouldn't be because the government wouldn't be able to prosecute it. We couldn't prosecute 12 million people. We have only 2 million people in jail right now for all the crimes that are committed in the country, 2.5 million."

He added: "My solution is close the border to illegal immigration."

1. Giuliani is correct but he does not identify the real criminals
The US could not prosecute all the illegal immigrants currently in the US because of the vast numbers. And I honestly believe, the US cannot deport all 12 million illegal immigrants for the same reason. But we could prosecute all the illegal employers. The real criminals are the US corporations, business and other entities who hire and employ the illegal immigrants. Closing the border will not do anything. You would still have 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. But shutting down the employment of these illegals would discourage most from returning and would encourage those here to return home.

2. Does make a problem when we know some of the reasons
why these people do not have jobs in their own country. Plus they can not feed them self or family and a lot has to do with corp. take over the means of how they did this. I recall reading this about Iraq and thinking corp. have been doing this for a lot of countries and it is trouble in the making. Iraq had a law put in that farmers would have to buy their seeds from some big Corp. and it was this new type seeds that means you can not save seeds for next year but have to re-buy the next year. I am sure this means a good size morg. on your land and I can guess where the land ends up. A type of slavery if you ask me and it was in those laws we put in after we went into Iraq. Well you have things like that working in Mex. also. I think we had a little fight with rum in the back ground once over such things. Does anyone recall that? A job over the border looks very good to people put into this type place. I do think it is a crime but one can hardly blame them.

3. Proves he can be easily disposed of
if he thinks making the occasional rational statement won't simply provide red meat for his opponents.
He argues like a democratic lawyer. That alone is gratuitous political poison in a GOP primary. The full discussion is irreleavnt. "No such thing as illegal immigration, say Guiliani. Part of system he agrees with."

Its actually kind of refreshing to here a republican imply that we have bigger problems than illegal immigration. And he is absolutely right, there is no way we could prosecute that many people. Its already ridiculous how much we pay out for medical benefits and everything for the people we already have incarcerated. And to boot, some of our actual citizens are not held accountable for far worse crimes than illegal immigration. So we can pay for them in prison, or let them work and make their own money here and support themselves. Either way, these guys need to get their priorities strait.
