As a long time DUer, can I just say...
that I HATE reading that phrase when used as part of an argument or flame fest. It is insulting. Both to the person to whom the insult is directed, and to all of the other DUers who cringe when reading it - as if it is some sort of attempt to "speak for old time DUers".

Look my opinion is just as worthy, or unworthy as the next person's. Doesn't matter whether or not I have been here a long time, or not. The difference might be that some other DUers are familiar with the types of things I post about, because I have posted over a long period of time - but given that these days I have limited posting time, I would bet that many, many newer DUers are recognized by many more people.

I have seen this used as a part of an argument/retort, numerous times lately - and it irks me. Sure there are times when bringing up Old time or New time status is relevant to a discussion (such as shifting group dynamics at the DU... or what did it used to be like... or what was the reaction to X event at DU?) - but to use it as if it adds credibility to one's argument while somehow also detracts credibility to the person to whom one posts the comment? Give me a break.

Feel free to chime in with your current pet peeve per rogue or obnoxious posting trends.

93. You're DUer #3466.
When you look at someone's profile, look up at the URL.

Here's the url when I click on your ID:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=user_profiles&u_id=103466

With people who were here before we hit 100,000, all you do is
look at the last five digits of the number at the end of the
URL, and it gives you your member number.

Yours is 03466. So you were the 3466th member to join DU. :)

I think I joined in late 2002 and I don't consider myself a "DU veteran" at all. But then, I'm a voracious reader and only an occasional commenter.

And the most amazing thing to me is how a newbie poster can write the most amazing posts with all the knowledge, spirit and technical skill of any old-timer here.

13. My current obnoxious posting trend peeve...
is a recent trend, occurring within the past two or three years: Some people think that they somehow contribute to the value of DU by spending 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, posting nowhere but in the lounge, picture thread after picture thread, with only a semi-annual visit to GD to involve themselves in flamewars, so that they can go back to the lounge and post nasty stuff about GD, as if the lounge and GD are as disparate as Free Republic and Democratic Underground.

when a topic gets to the 'shiney object' phase - where everyone is posting a brand new thread a minute - so that the front page of the GD is about 80% shiney object new threads and 20% others - then the those threads give voice to the folks who would just like to read about something else - and allows the vent at those who aren't willing to settle with posting their thought to one of the other existing 10+ threads ;-) :hi:

and my long-time pet peeve are the posts 'there are much more important things going on today than "x"'

like i can't be concerned or interested in more thatn one thing at a time. it especially irritates me when this is in response to some kind of current event or celebrity thread.

i know there are horrible things going on in this world. but i can't spend every second of every waking day worrying and pulling my hair out about the state of things. sometimes i (and other people) need some levity or stupidity to help us cope. hell i already take anti-depressants what more do these people want? i guess i could get so upset about things that i kill myself or someone else but i don't think that is the ultimate expression of concern. i can still care about our country and the environment going to hell in a handbasket even if i read about the stupid things that brittney does. it makes me feel not so screwed up.

41. Appeal to Authority fallacy
"A long time DUer" does not guarantee some sort of expertise in anything, except for the ability to hit the 'reply' button on an Internet forum.

On the other hand, the phrase "As a long time DUer, can I just say" would be quite appropriate in a context pertaining to posting history or certain trends at DU.

126. Typical newbie post.
Now, if you ask me, I'll tell you that 2004 was the good old days. Back when I started posting, we had to walk uphill both ways to get to DU, broadband was a luxury of the elite, and we were only allowed to type with nine fingers, maximum, because that's all the government would allow us.

I meant to play on how the phrase is used ( :eyeroll: ) not as in "a discussion for old timers". Glad you chimed in - and I hope others realize the thread is to/for all, not just Long-Timers.

68. No, I agree and understand your post -
the phrase is used to enahnce one side of an argument and give an opinion greater weight but by using it, it can be intimidating for the newbies who don't have that ammo just yet. Also the rapid fire takedowns of newbies who venture to post for the first time, granted some may be trolls, and the takedowns are justifiable, can be hurtful if the posts are trying to be legit. Despite it, I love DU.

55. My biggest pet peeve going around DU right now is...
... the use of quotation marks around the word "progressive".

It usually comes up whenever some DB starts a flame-worthy thread expecting everyone to fall in line behind them. When this turns out to not be the case, a post stating something similar to this appears: "I can't believe so many "progressives" on here think..."

It's sanctimony wrapped in liberal flag.

I can recall seeing posters, who later became mega posters, poked with sticks and roughly treated. All simply due to the short length of time they've been posting here.

We all have to begin someplace. We all have different perspectives to offer. And most importantly, the person you're speaking with isn't a product of the number of post they've racked up on DU. No matter if you agree with them or not.

It's human nature, but that doesn't mean it's a part of our nature we shouldn't strive to overcome.

I had been posting here for well over a month before I knew what a freeper was or even that I was being insulted half the time. My innocence no doubt helped insulate me from insults that may have tainted my opinions of what has turned out to be a wonderful experience for me.

117. I Can Identify With That
NanceGregg (a goddess-I am not worthy) can probably tell you exactly which of her "You Know You're a DUer" articles of faith this falls under, but just in the last couple of days I started a flaming thread about a topic I will not name, that was locked after 30 or so entries, and for good reason. It involved another long series of threads on a single topic dominating GD in recent days.

Several of the posters who didn't like what I had to say felt that it was some sort of valid point against my entitlement to have any opinion in the matter, to point out that I had been a member since April 2007 and had racked up less than a whopping 150 or so posts of my own. It was also suggested that I just hide the threads, like it was my responsibility to slog through all the mud being generated rather the parties responsible to do something about the mud.

Never mind that I was visiting DU long before I joined, never mind that I read far more than I post because there are many intelligent, active, focused DUers who inform and stimulate me daily, never mind that too many of those big-numbers posters are notching great tallies WITHOUT REALLY CONTRIBUTING ANYTHING OF SUBSTANCE, (and we won't even go into experiences of a lifetime) I am still a "newbie."

Therefore, to some DUers, the weight of my opinion is somehow inferior to theirs, and fair game for attack on the basis of my getting uppity and not knowing my little newbie place. Exactly the sort of crap you'd expect elsewhere, name your personal devil of a Jerry Springeresque public message board where they let anyone in, and anyone stay, and anyone rave on endlessly and unproductively-often in the wrong forum-about their pet topic.

I joined this community for what I thought were good reasons, and if I am so quickly disillusioned and disappointed in some of the company, and in some of the behaviors, maybe it's important that I SAY SO.

Thanks for bringing this up and giving me an opportunity to vent about it, salin.

119. please remember that you often read, without responding...
and realize that the posters who pull the "long timer" or "ew - the newbie" lines are a very small percentage of those reading the thread/post. Just because a few folks are vocal and persistant, does not mean it represents the majority perception. Granted sometimes it does (pump up privatization of social security, for example, and one will be soundly tamped down - and that would represent the general view of the forum) - but that is not a rule.

Glad to give you a place to vent. I didn't see the thread, the responses or the lock, so I can't respond to your example, but I do hope you keep posting.

133.  My point: as follows
At one point in the great history of this amazing digital world known to many as "DU" ... the boys in blue were the ladies and gentlemen that danced across this electronic oasis and called each-other on their misconceptions... and it was embraced as a movement towards truth and away from idealism... So in reference to being an "oldtimer" it has nothing to to do with a "Nuby" it has to do with a time when DU was different. No one is thugging, I believe the point was to help a brother up, not knock a brother down. Or in a more 21st century vernacular, don't be a hater.
