He can be a tool a lot of the time; he's obnoxious and very - to put it charitably - idiosyncratic. For example, he's been a fairly strong hawk on Iraq. But he'd be better than a Republican in that seat and he'd actually vote with us more than Ben Nelson does.

Sen. Kerrey had previously stated that if Hagel ran he'd endorse him, but if he retired Kerrey might run for the seat.

Not particularly a big fan of Kerrey, but it's a Republican seat that we had no chance of winning until today.

I've always liked Kerrey for his integrity and honesty. I don't always agree with his policies but at least he tells you what he's thinking.

Kerrey received massive injuries from a grenade that exploded at his feet and threw him backward onto the jagged rocks. Although bleeding profusely and suffering great pain, he displayed outstanding courage and presence of mind in immediately directing his element's fire into the heart of the enemy camp. Utilizing his radio, Lt. (jg.) Kerrey called in the second element's fire support, which caught the confused Viet Cong in a devastating crossfire. After successfully suppressing the enemy's fire, and although immobilized by his multiple wounds, he continued to maintain calm, superlative control as he ordered his team to secure and defend an extraction site. Lt. (jg.) Kerrey resolutely directed his men, despite his near unconscious state, until he was eventually evacuated by helicopter. The havoc brought to the enemy by this very successful mission cannot be over-estimated. The enemy soldiers who were captured provided critical intelligence to the allied effort. Lt. (jg.) Kerrey's courageous and inspiring leadership, valiant fighting spirit, and tenacious devotion to duty in the face of almost overwhelming opposition sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

As for the other incident I'll attribute it to the fog of war or I'll give it as much credence as the claim by the Swift Boaters that John Kerry shot a fifteen year old guerilla fighter in the back as he ran away...

19. This story got a lot of MSM attention a few years ago.

About the time he was considering a presidential run. Changed his mind for some reason. I'll check for some links.

And just for the record, I always liked Kerrey. At one time I thought he was presidential material. But that incident changed my view of him slightly.

I have read the accounts...If what he did was intentionally evil they would have never made him president of the New School which is a liberal university.

He also was Jim Webb's National Finance Chair:


Kerrey is friends with fellow Vietnam Veteran, James Webb. In 2006 he became involved in convincing Webb to run for the US Senate. Webb entered the Virginia Democratic Primary, and Kerrey volunteered to serve as Webb's National Finance Chair. Webb went on to win the extremely close election in Virginia, defeating George Allen.

Vietnam was a terrible place and from what I've seen and heard from vets, "fog of war" is a very credible defense a lot of times.

everyone's OK with these two facts: 1) He's pro-war, and 2) He would have supported and endorsed Hagel, a conservative Repub, if he had run again--OVER the Dem challenger.
