Bin Laden appearance stirs uneasiness in Arab world

By Inal Ersan

DUBAI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden's first video in almost three years has drawn enthusiastic support from al Qaeda supporters but other Muslims in the Arab world seem less impressed, and wary of new violence.

Marking the sixth anniversary of the group's Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, the Saudi-born militant described the United States as vulnerable, a message some of his followers saw as a sign a new operation might be approaching.

Analysts were divided as to whether the appearance was intended to inspire new attacks.

1. Question - this is from Reuters coming from Dubai - the thought is

now crossing my mind that since Dubai is the new home of Halliburton (and the future home of Cheney?) - and host to the group who own our ports - is it worth trusting anything coming from there? I feel a disdain and a skepticism. How would Reuters figure into it. Couldn't they be just a new source of propagand just as our corporate tv and certain newspapers are?

One thing my gut tells me - bin Laden would never want us joining him in anything. Who most wants to hear that he is 'inviting' us to convert to Islam? The very religious right wing followers and self-blinded followers. They are keeping those people riled up. Who are 'they'? The right wing.

He stated what he wanted very clearly, I don't remember conversion on his list. (He wanted us out of Saudi Arabia and holy places for one - we pulled our bases from Saudi Arabia (all?) so we gave him that, but then we bombed some holy places in Iraq.)

bin Laden or the concoction they have come up for him and the Cheney PNAC AIPAC etc groups are all a good match.

It is a requirement of his faith to offer non-believers the opportunity to convert before attacking.

6. Thanks. Do you know if there was an offer before 9-11. Not saying
that bin Laden was responsible for 9-11, just curious if conversion was on his list or ever offered. It would be a good clue.

(I hope this thread doesn't get taken from GD for mention of x-xx.)

7. Well
I'm sure if he was planning to attack America then Bush-Cheney would do everything in their power to stop him, just like last time.

Oh waitaminute...

3. The common people in Dubai are Shiite.
No reason to believe there's great sympathy for Osama there.

8. A good post, and I agree.
I posted something similar over on the Daily Kos which stated that Bin Laden had some very clear objectives. One of which we did (get U.S. troops out of Saudi Arabia).

It's intersting because I've been reading some European papers. Not ONE of them say that Bin Ladin is urging them to convert to Islam. Methinks we're dealing with some "lost in translation" issues. I believe the White House would just l-o-v-e to stir up their fundie masses.

4. "...has drawn enthusiastic support from al Qaeda supporters".
:wtf:

Have they done a poll of al-Qaeda members, is there a focus group, a supporters' magazine...how do they know this?

5. they know this bc they read the western MSM and cherry pick what the polls mean
and turn them into talking point .

if they kill innocent muslims thats ok,
they got a fatwa from a high ranking imam that said "to make an omlette, IT IS PERMISSABLE for a few good eggs to be broken'

/sarc

they do seem to parrot alot of the media talking heads btw
