Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., says he had hoped the Republican bathroom incident was behind us
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/09/president-bush-.html

USA TODAY's Kathy Kiely reports that Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., is saying publicly what many of his GOP colleagues are saying privately: "The idea you can get a legal resolution by Sept. 30 is virtually impossible."

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is scheduled to address reporters this afternoon. Craig is sure to come up.

"It's very hard to vacate a guilty plea," says Graham, a military lawyer before he entered the Senate. He also reflects the political concerns of his colleagues. "Once he said Sept 30, there was a lot of expectations it would be behind us," Graham says. "To find out it's not is not good." Republicans have to defend 22 seats in next year's elections; Idaho was one of a handful they hoped not to have to worry about, given the large GOP margins there.

Adding to the Republicans' heartburn: The re-eruption of the Craig story contrasts vividly with the celebration Democratic senators are holding today for the return of one of their own: Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., arrived at his office today after eight months of rehab for a brain injury. His fellow senator and former political foe, Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., was on hand to hold the door open for Johnson.

1. Hasn't it been rumored for a long time that Lindsey Graham is gay?
At least that's what I've been hearing for years.

10. I'm beginning to wonder if most of the GOP is made up of self-hating gays.
And why would any gay put his neck under the guillotine by joining the political party who wins elections on their anti-gay beliefs? Are the gays that join the GOP mentally ill or what?

14. I certainly think the leadership is,
which means they're headed for a major clash with the base.

To which I say..."Buttered or un-buttered?"

8. Craig's plea agreement had a key omission
that may make it easier for him, i.e., the acknowledgment of his right to an attorney and his waiving of that right.

On purpose? I don't know, but it's there.

15. They used to be so much better at this stuff.
But we've got one half of the GOP ready throw him under the bus. Another GOP faction is saying "let's put this behind us". Craig pleads, craig rescends. Arlen says fight it. Craig resigns. Craig stays. RW talking head says "shame shame - Craig's like Clinton." Others say "no big deal"

Why can't they get their stories straight on this one? I think the prospect of bathroom sex makes the Mighty Wurlitzer fall apart.

18. Republicans are hypocritical by nature.
Only the Log Cabin Republican admit they are gay. Democrats generally don't hide things. That is what gets them into trouble.
Democrats are mostly honest. :dem:

19. Yeah, but they used to be more consistently hypocritical
and have elaborate reasoning prepared to cover the hypocricy. We'd actually have to analyze it to uncover it.

Don't get me wrong - this is much less frustrating and far more entertaining.

Will Mitch McConnell Be The Next Outed Gay Republican?
Posted by Howie Klein at 12:00 PM on August 29, 2007.
Howie Klein: Why is Sen. McConnell in such a tizzy over Larry Craig's scandal, I bet you can guess.
Voting-wise, Larry Craig's record is a bit to the right of Miss McConnell's but, when it comes right down to it, the two of them see almost eye to eye on everything: both are classic Bush-Cheney rubber stamps. Several of my friends can't understand why two closeted homosexuals have been so virulently anti-gay. I'm not a psychologist (though I gave it a shot yesterday) so let's just stick to the politics on this. And the GOP leadership is playing hardball-- against one of their own. After his pathetic "I'm not gay" press conference yesterday Tim Russert, on Nightly News, said "I talked to Republicans today -- they just want Senator Craig to exit, to leave."

In 2002 the two closeted far right extremists each went for the #2 slot in the Senate Republican leadership. McConnell beat him. Yesterday McConnell released this statement on behalf of the Republican leaders in the Senate:

22. I read that, too: Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell to be outed soon.

I think it was at BartCop. Supposedly, Mitch was only in the Army for 10 days before being discharged "for fondling a private's privates" -- sounds like Bart, anyway!
