Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue got an up close and personal view of how a United States Submarine operates during his one-day deployment aboard the USS Florida (SSGN 728) Aug. 30 and 31. He became the first active governor to deploy with a submarine at NSB Kings Bay.

Perdue got a first hand look at the many different jobs that must be performed for a submarine on deployment. Although he was only underway for an overnight stay, the governor was impressed with the performance of the crew.

"There is only one word to describe the experience and that is awesome," Perdue said. "It was incredible, I gained a new respect for the work ethnic and professionalism of our American Sailors, the jobs they do on that complex vessel were just fantastic."

The governor was not the only first-time Sailor on the submarine, as this was also the first underway period for STSSA Romero Julian who recently reported for duty. According to Julian, this was an unexpected thrill he can tell the folks back home.

"What a great first sea story I will have to share with everyone back home," he said. "Having the governor of my home state aboard the USS Florida on my very first deployment is an incredible experience."

Another aspect Perdue was impressed with was the leadership showed by USS Florida Gold Crew Commanding Officer Capt. John Litherland.
