Rumored AG Pick Likely to Get Opposition

Ted Olson is "leading the pack" as the administration's likely next attorney general, Roll Call reports (http://www.rollcall.com/issues/53_23/news/19890-1.html?CMP=OTC-RSS).

Olson would be a tough sell. After all, most Democrats, including Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) opposed Olson when he came up for confirmation for solicitor general in 2001 (he passed 51-47). The memory of Olson's role as a lawyer for Bush in the 2000 recount imbroglio was fresh. And Olson's history as a member of The American Spectator's board of directors during the so-called "Arkansas Project" in the 90's, when the magazine, backed by millions from millionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, set to ending Clinton's presidency by scandal, also became a major issue. As Leahy put it, his concern was that Olson's "sharp partisanship over the last several years might not be something that he could leave behind." Given Democrats' expressed desire for a less partisan nominee to succeed Gonzales, it's hard to see how Leahy wouldn't have similar concerns today.

Roll Call reports on how Olson might play this time around:

"At press time GOP and Democratic aides said it was unclear how receptive Democratic lawmakers will be to an Olson nomination. The Conference appears to be split between longtime Washington insiders who view Olson as a reliable member of their ranks and relative newcomers who see him as the principal architect of Bush’s successful legal campaign in the messy aftermath of the 2000 presidential race. ..."

1. Likely to get opposition?
LIKELY?

It better be more than freaking likely.

2. To paraphrase someone
that's near and dear to me, in the case of the A.G., we'll be "replacing one flaming bag of dog shit on our collective doorstep with another."

4. So there is
no hope of whomever getting in after Gonzo being any better than he was. After all * has to cover his ass somehow. The best way to do that is to make sure that the department that pulls the legal strings is as firmly under his control as he can make it.

6. He won't even make it to Committee let alone to the floor.
Leahy has said no hearings until he gets specified info requested from bushco re warrentless wiretapping and attny. firings.

14. that's about how I think on that rumor as well
wow, if they spent a year scouring the world's worst hives of scum & villainy, they probably couldn't get worse than Ted Olson.

3. Olson is the worst kind of party hack
Replacing one partisan hack with another had better
meet with a storm of protest in the Senate, and Leahy
will be hard put to let Olson's name even get out of
committee. If it's Olson, it may be another Harriet
Meyers ploy--put up someone who will raise a storm of
protest, then have them withdraw their name, and name
someone equally (or more) offensive, but who has stayed
so far below the radar that they might sneak through.

It worked with Alito, but that was when the right wing was
in power. Now that Leahy is Judiciary Committee chairman, it
won't be anywhere near as easy to get away with this. Like
Barbara Boxer said: elections have consequences. Especially
when they're free of Republican fraud!

5. Is There Any Other Kind of Bush Crony?
You expect upright, honest and ethical people to hang around Bush and do his dirty work?

8. Olson is exactly the kind of person they'll approve.
And they'll sit around and tell him how honorable he is and how much he sacrificed on 9/11.

10. That's ignoring reality
Leahy opposed him for SG back in 2001. He's not planning on holding hearings until the Committee gets requested info. And there are NO dems on the committee who support him.

16. It is...
but IIRC Olson sought solace over the loss of his wife in the arms of another woman the night of 9/11.

That doesn't make him anything but a good Republican--isn't Mitterand-level infidelity almost expected at the upper echelons of the GOP?--but it makes him a hard sell to the Christian Right if it got out.

His participation in the Arkansas Project, in Selection 2000 and in the Bush Administration will make him a hard sell in the Senate.

I'm gonna tell you the truth here: Bush's very best shot at getting a clean confirmation is Holy Joe Lieberman. Holy Joe will do three things for him: it'll give him some shot at looking at least slightly bipartisan, it'll put someone who's totally on Bush's side, but who isn't absolutely corrupt (I'm certain he's a little corrupt but he's NOWHERE near the level of Ted Olson, Alberto Gonzalez, Harriet Miers or any of Bush's other Cronies With Law Licenses) in the AG's office, and it will allow the GOP to retake control of the Senate.
