IRS audit clears Dobson, Focus on Family
IRS audit clears Dobson, Focus on Family

September 10, 2007

Focus on the Family chairman James Dobson has been cleared of accusations that he endangered his organization's nonprofit status by endorsing Republican candidates in 2004, an Internal Revenue Service audit found.

The IRS said Dobson, who backed President Bush's re-election bid, was acting as an individual and not on behalf of the conservative Christian ministry.

The influential child psychologist announced the findings today on his national radio show.

At least two liberal watchdog groups — Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and Colorado Springs-based Citizens Project — filed complaints with the IRS in 2005 against Dobson. The complaints alleged that Dobson improperly used Focus on the Family resources to support candidates and urged investigations into the group's tax-exempt status.

8. being on TV is an individual thing
It does not use Focus on the Family resources. However, using his radio show or newsletter or website does. Then, too, there is the question of supporting a President who is already elected, versus engaging in a campaign. Dobson is free to use FOF resources to support Dubya's policies because that is supporting an issue rather than a candidate. It's all kinda fuzzy, but the law certainly does not prevent him from being on TV.

9. IRS = Another organization that needs to be cleaned out in 2008
It would be nice if all the white-collar criminals were given long sentences in real prison, but I'll settle for them getting out of the government
