Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman remains confident his conviction will be overturned. .....

34. ARTICLE: There’s No News in the ‘Birmingham News’
There’s No News in the ‘Birmingham News’
BY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED September 10, 2007
http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/09/hbc-90001174

The Russian newspaper Pravda, which laughingly means truth, used to have a banner under the masthead that read “Organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.” So at least there was some truth in labeling: you could see pretty quickly exactly whose “truth” it was disseminating.

But Pravda is so easily upstaged by the Birmingham News, which offers no fair warning. It should say “Organ of the Executive Committee of the Alabama G.O.P.” This evening offers us a wonderful opportunity to see how they shovel lies, lies and more lies about the Siegelman case. Are they even conscious of the dissembling? Sometimes I wonder.

Today, the Justice Department’s decision to stonewall the request of the Judiciary Committee for documents concerning the politically tinged prosecution of Governor Don E. Siegelman was announced publicly. ....

22. Apparently, your browser does not have a helper applicaion assigned to this file type.
Next time, launch a radio player you have installed, right-click the play link to copy the URL, then paste it into the media player address box.

You can go to your browser preferences to fix this.

You have to make sure you have a media player on your system, like RealPlayer, iTunes, Windows Media, etc. Make a capable player the "Helper App" that the browser launches to play the type.

Or maybe I've become a wee bit cynical in the last 6+ years, but I'm actually surprised that I'm not more cynical with this bunch. :)

Rove is just a liar:

On Friday August 17, PBS’s Bill Moyers criticized Karl Rove for cynically invoking God and Christianity for political purposes while telling others that he is an agnostic, calling him “a skeptic, a secular manipulator.”

Two days later, when Rove appeared on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked him to take on Moyers’ criticism. “I’m a Christian. I go to church. I’m an Episcopalian,” responded Rove. “You know, Mr. Moyers ought to do a little bit better research before he does another drive-by slander.”

http://www.comedianforpresident.com/

Just so we have it on record if something did happen, a la Lay.

How crazy a world we live in to have to question every single thing about those w power. Even whether someone died.

29. Except, it's an election rigging gone bonkers. When at first you plan to deceive
you are stuck in the wheel in the cage, and there is no getting out of the lie. What went down in 2002 was going to come around if Siegelman was elected, since he would have the power to investigate how the election was fixed against him. And, so the plot had to thicken. Enter Abramoff and Rove, the Money Bags and the Brain.

Like in the cartoon Pinky and the Brain, Brain Rove is imputedly intelligent and develops Rube Goldberg plans for national domination, seeing his Boss' inevitable rise to power as beneficial to the world rather than mere megalomania and mental defect. Unfortunately for the Brain, the scheme is doomed to failure by common mishaps. Pinky Abramoff does something idiotic and ruins the plan, stealing from the Indians to finance Brain's schemes. These politically-engineered rats grew up in the wrong cage, the Nixon dirty tricks era.

54. They failed to foresee the oversight. Election loss was their November Surprise
Up to the last minute, the Rs did not expect one iota of oversight during Bush's tenure, because they had Congress, the Justice system, and Executive working in political lockstep. Well, "was" is the correct tense. They are just stonewalling now. The facts are unavoidable, and more crop up every day, it seems.

This does not mean they are powerless, just that they are facing opposition and can no longer entirely hide the facts or control Congress. The duplicitous days of John McCain "investigating" Abramoff are over!

Dana Jill Simpson
Life long Alabama Republican and Ex-campaign worker for Bob Riley

Jill Dana Simpson — a Rainsville attorney, and lifelong Republican who
worked for Gov. Bob Riley’s first gubernatorial campaign, then later for
the Roy Moore Campaign — filed an affidavit in Georgia, 2007,
describing a conversation that took place during a telephone
conference call days after Riley defeated Siegelman in the 2002
election. The content of the call implicates the White House
involvement in the Siegelman prosecution.

40. "Under the direction of the White House, and particularly Karl Rove" starting in 2002
Justice in Alabama
BY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED June 24, 2007
http://harpers.org/archive/2007/06/hbc-90000351

........

Under the direction of the White House, and particularly Karl Rove, the Justice Department undertook a series of prosecutions designed to undermine the positions of elected Democratic officeholders and help the Republican Party take their positions. In this space over the last two months, I have catalogued a series of cases which suggest White House-driven manipulation of criminal prosecutions. Sometimes the White House has intervened to shut down or obstruct prosecutions of Republicans – a process that started certainly by the spring of 2002, when Jack Abramoff, a protégé of Karl Rove and Tom DeLay, sought White House intervention to fire the U.S. Attorney in Guam. “I don’t care if they appoint bozo the clown, we need to get rid of Fred Black,” Abramoff wrote in March 2002.. And indeed, following White House intervention, the U.S. attorney was fired, a Republican party functionary was appointed in his place, and the investigation that threatened to expose a seedy Abramoff operation involving human trafficking was shut down. Thanks to the role played directly by the White House, the process took only a few days.

41. Bush Justice Department -- The Political Profiling of Elected Democratic Officials
The Political Profiling of Elected Democratic Officials: When Rhetorical Vision Participation Runs Amok
Donald C. Shields and John F. Cragan - 18 February 2007
http://www.epluribusmedia.org/columns/2007/20070212_political_profiling.html

VoteOur ongoing study of the Bush Justice Department (to be published in 2009) investigates the implications of the Bush/Ashcroft/Gonzales Justice Department's blended religious -fundamentalist and neo-conservative rhetorical vision. The study views the impact of the Justice Department's vision on the fight against public corruption and reveals the non-proportionate political profiling of elected Democratic officials.

We presented the preliminary data through August 2004 at the Southern Speech Communication Annual meeting in April 2005 in Baton Rouge and as a refereed panel paper with data through December 2004 at the November 2005 annual meeting of the National Communication Association.

We compare political profiling to racial profiling by presenting the results (January 2001 through December 2006) of the U.S. Attorneys' federal investigation and/or indictment of 375 elected officials. The distribution of party affiliation of the sample is compared to the available normative data (50% Dem, 41% GOP, and 9% Ind.).

Data* indicate that the offices of the U.S. Attorneys across the nation investigate seven (7) times as many Democratic officials as they investigate Republican officials, a number that exceeds even the racial profiling of African Americans in traffic stops.

Testimony should shed light on story
http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20070911/NEWS/709110309/1012/NEWS02

Rainsville attorney Jill Simpson, whose allegations about White House involvement in the investigation of former Gov. Don Siegelman have been disputed, should welcome the opportunity to testify under oath before a congressional committee next week.

We trust the committee will extend the same courtesy to the people Simpson says were involved in a 2002 conference call in which she alleges that Siegelman’s future was discussed.......

Canary and Bob Riley have said they have no recollection of the conversation. Butts has flatly denied that it ever took place.

It’s a bizarre story but stranger things have happened. The seriousness of the allegation warrants the sworn testimony of all involved before Congress.

45. Team Chertoff and the Art of Political Prosecution
Chertoff and the Politics of Prosecution
Team Chertoff and the Art of Political Prosecution
by Scott Horton - 07 Sept. 2007
http://www.pacificfreepress.com/content/view/1640/81/

Current and former Justice Department officials I have interviewed have consistently identified Michael Chertoff, his successor Alice Fisher and his protégé Noel Hillman, as figures with a strong interest in political prosecutions. Each apparently took an interest in the Siegelman case for all the wrong reasons, I am told, and each had regular communications with the White House throughout this period.

But the Siegelman case was only one of many cases with political overtones which were closely dogged by loyal Republican Party activists at the top of the criminal process at Justice. Today the Los Angeles Times is offering more evidence linking Chertoff to political vendettas using the prosecutorial resources of the Department of Justice.

David Savage and Tom Hamburger report (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-chertoff4sep04,1,4610879.story?coll=la-headlines-nation&ctrack=1&cset=true):

Shortly after President Bush took office in 2001, Michael Chertoff, then head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, met with the conservative group Judicial Watch. It wanted criminal charges brought against Hillary Rodham Clinton ....

The Los Angeles Times report concerning the highly political vendetta prosecution of Rosen greatly strengthens the accusations made by a Michigan attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, in a case with strong parallels and similar political circumstances. It also casts a strong light on the mindset and working relationships within Justice at the time the chase after Alabama Governor Siegelman began.

Abramoff and Rove working together to manipulate an election, rigging the 2002 election, politization of the DoJ, illegal campaign funding, conning Indians out of 30 million dollars, witness intimidation and obstruction of justice, possible perjury by the admitted corrupt official for a reduced sentence that was not delivered on (will he recant?), White House involvement, and more. And, oh what a list of players!

And, given all the hearings and resignations so far, the public is ready to take on a "fair and balanced" weighting of this scales of justice issue.

55. Here is the affidavit on TPM's Docs
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/docs/rove-affidavit/

Does this meet your criteria for "bad s**t"?
Of course, it is going to get much funkier in that Department.

49. Sorry, Nancy & Rahm aren't going to pursue it
they plan on giving the GOP a free pass on all illegal activities past and present.

Too busy.

50. 50 investigations, 300 hearings, how many suppoenas? Too busy indeed
going after abuse everywhere it is cropping up. There is so much to investigate, I don't know how they do it.

Do pass on a few links of what you are doing to assist the effort.
