Ft. Bragg-based soldier dies in Iraq
By Marlon A. Walker, Staff Writer A soldier with ties to North Carolina was killed in combat this week while overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Department of Defense officials said today. Cpl. Ryan Woodward, 22, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Saturday of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire just northwest of Baghdad.
"Corporal Woodward was a highly dedicated paratrooper," Capt. Christopher Chapman, 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment rear detachment commander, said in a release from Fort Bragg. "He was dedicated not only to his profession but also in serving this great nation."
Woodward, a scout javelin gunner, joined the Army in February 2006. He completed Cavalry Scout One Station Unit training at Fort Knox, Ky., in June of that year. He reported to his unit a month later.
Spc. Ceasar Chavez, a friend and fellow soldier, recalled in the Fort Bragg news release how Woodward was very outgoing and was known for always trying his hardest. He was also a jokester, Chavez said.
