2. Anything Ken Burns creates, I'll watch |
|
"The War" will capture one of my two great historical passions, and I fully expect it to be as masterful as his other one, "Baseball."
Burns could probably come out with five hours titled "Pants" that would be enthralling.

3. I've enjoyed his previous productions, I just hope that, for once, someone |

captures the brutal, unrelenting, horror of war. The lack of smell-o-vision is a real detriment, as is the ability to turn away, mute the sound or turn it off.
The age-old glorification of the worst obscenity man has ever devised is criminal in itself and I hope he doesn't continue it.

There was a GREAT Q & A session with Burns afterward. The film is gonna be fucking amazing. Here's a link to one of my threads about my experience at the preview: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=174x4923

But our World War II hero died this year, along with too many of his old friends. I'm still too raw, I think.
I'm glad Burns did it, before they all died. I know my mother got a request for information, but she didn't answer it. She was an inspector, going after price gougers and black marketeers. They were as willing in that war as this one, to sell shoddy equipment that would get our soldiers killed.

It's the only television program on my must-see list this month (well, that and The Office, but that's a guilty pleasure so we won't mention it).
To be honest, it'll be the first Ken Burns documentary I've seen-- I know, I know. I'm a heathen. An apostate of good taste.

"I'm actually wondering how you managed that."
I had cable TV at the time, and was semi-addicted to the classic movie stations when his other documentaries were aired. Actually, I particularly remember that during the premier episode of his documentary on jazz, I was busily watching three Cary Grant - Irene Dunne comedies AMC played one after the other.
(I've heard of Rocky Horror virgins, but Ken Burn virgins...? I *am* getting old!)

Ken Burns does excellent work, so I have been eagerly awaiting this one since I heard he was doing it.
I've always had a fascination with WW2 history. My grandfather was a vet (navy - pacific theater) and his complete refusal to talk about the war made me want to learn as much as I could about it, to try to see why he was so affected by it. He never would speak about it, not to my grandmother, not to other vets, no one. He just said he still had nightmares about it and didn't want to think about it during daylight hours, too.

19. About three or four weeks ago... |
|
About three or four weeks ago, there was a spot-story on the Jim Lehrer (sp?) News Hour about a national Latino group who had pressured the producers of the documentary to have it re-edited with a greater emphasis placed on the Latino contribution to the war. Burns was reticent to comply, but was finally compelled to do so by his producers.
I don't know if that's what he's referring to in his racism charge, but it's the only thing I can figure.
(Not that I think Burns is racist-- I don't know either way, and it really doesn't matter to me as I've gotten pretty good at separating the art from the artist...)

I enjoy Burns work...and though his Jazz series was brilliant. However, I've felt bombarded for the last decade with all types of World War II stuff. My late father was in a medical unit in Europe from 1943 til the end...and I still have all his letters, uniform and other artifacts...they still sit in his old footlocker. I've seen a ton of History Channel programs on every aspect of the war...it's a topic that has been covered many times over in the recent past.
I'll watch the programs, and hope he brings something different than reading letters behind pictures of sad sacks.
