Townhall: It's Time to Get Over Katrina Already
Two years after Katrina, everywhere you turn, there are people carping, whining, and kvetching. Just why hasn't the pity party for the citizens of New Orleans run out of booze and chips yet?

It's not as if hurricanes are a once a millennium event in the United States. In fact, residents of Florida have so many of them that they don't even cancel a barbecue for anything under a Category 3.

Moreover, people lose their homes in this country every day of the year. If it isn't a hurricane, it's an earthquake. If it isn't an earthquake, it's a tornado. If it isn't a tornado, it's a fire. If it isn't a fire, it's a flood. Yet nobody sits and frets about John Doe, age 58, who lost his house in a flash flood two years ago or Jane Doe, age 60, who had her house blown away by a twister back in 2005.

But, we're all supposed to eternally sit around and weep tiny little tears of sadness for the people who really took it on the chin in a hurricane because they chose to live in a city shaped like a soup bowl on the coast. Let me tell all the citizens of New Orleans something that should have been told to them 18 months ago: it's time to stop playing the sympathy card and get over it.

From the people who cry and weep and moan about Sept 11th each and every day for five years, Katrina victims get a hearty "Get over it".

SUCK IT!

Hallmark of freepers:

Greater value placed on those dead who can gain them more political advantage.

40. At some point the pressure cooker will explode...
If it is allowed to build up longer and longer, because these guys "don't get paybacks" for too long, it will be ugly when its too tough for them to stop. That's the way history has treated people that "insulate" themselves from their fellow countrymen's problems for too long. Mussolini could tell you that if he were brought back from the dead.

14. Correction. The people who actually suffered personal loss from 9/11 need to move on.
But Republicans who can use 9/11 for political gain are still milking it for all it's worth.

Appalling.

Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 10:36 AM by DesertedRose
It affected portions of Mississippi and Alabama, too. Should THEY get over it too while they try to rebuild their lives, or was that little ditty just directed at the folks in the majority black, majority democratic city that got hit?

Yeah, that's what I thought. :eyes:

Did you hear that, NOLA? Hurry up, get over it and LEAVE so they can bulldoze your houses down and make room for the 'gentrified', Disneyland version of New Orleans, condos and all. :sarcasm:

Amazing that folks in Holland who live below sea level can manage to do just fine, but somehow people in New Orleans brought this tragedy upon themselves for living there.

15. Fuck you John Hawkins.
Katrina wasn't like a house fire or a tornado you ignorant piece of shit. Most of the deaths came from an engineering failure, not a natural disaster or an accident. Although I still maintain that Katrina was a category 4 at landfall. Unlike Hawkins, I actually rode out the storm.

And other places were wiped out like the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Plaquemines parish and parts of East St. Tammany parish.

Nobody is saying that Katrina survivors deserve lifelong support either. Rebuilding *gasp* takes time and no amount of praying is going to magically erect a structure. I read a story recently about a FEMA trailer park in Florida being closed years after the hurricane struck.

And unless you rode out the hurricane here then quit telling us how to feel and trying to minimize what happened. Perhaps if Hawkins would quit apologizing for Bush he might get some of that compassion that Republicans like to talk about.

Argh it's hard to argue with people who possess a Styrofoam packing peanut for a brain. Unfortunately there are many morans just like him.

find their way out of a paper bag, good luck to you when the government causes your destruction, feeds off the proceeds to put lives back together and uses your area as an experiment and then does you the extra special favor of moving you far, far away. There's no accountability for the money spent.....now, let's look at the ninth ward....nope, they didn't spend any of it there....but that's mostly black and poor, isn't it? :sarcasm:

Duers: Remember old mama bush saying the evacuees were better off in Houston on a cot than they were in their homes...something to that evil effect?

I read many of the replies to the hawkins' article.....I've decided that repukes deserve every nasty, vile word that can be said about them. To come down on people who's government decided their fate, more than mother nature did, I am at a loss for the appropriate words.

edit: I'm K&Ring this because I want EVERYONE to read about their fellow citizens' empathy!

27. What a moran!!!111!! (They are really monsters, not morons.)
In Florida we start to get a little restless when it takes more than two weeks to get the power back on.

Two years? That's just an unexcusable embarrasment on top of a huge insult that is piled on top of a devastating injury.

They will never understand what common decency is all about.

Both before and after Katrina. Get indignant about the townhall columnist if you like, but I've never understood why some poor people deserve our compassion, and others deserve indifference and scorn.

This is not a call to ignore NO, however.

41. In one way, I agree with the Townhall axehole.

I think Katrina is overblown to some degree, in that the hurricane and devastation are somehow so much greater than anything else we've ever experienced... which leads to an acceptance that recovery may be exceedingly difficult, and so we're slower to crack the whip on the entities responsible for the recovery.

A city was flooded. What the hell is the hold-up in getting the city back on its feet. Heads need to roll.

Here is another example, and a fairly fresh one, at that (do the mooks get their talking points faxed to them every morning?!)

This particular mook is from Minnesota. How's the bridges working out for you up there, bucky?

Oh, and you say the people left in NOLA are primarily criminals. Is that just me and my wife, bucky, or do you include my children and their teachers and doctors in your stats as well?

(yes, the KamaAina who leaves comments there is the same as the one here :-) )
