Blast from the Past. Remember when the VFW used to hold dog and badger fights? |
|
After WW2 for 12 years or so, the VFW’s used to hold Dog and Badger fights to raise money. Tickets were sold for a pretty good price for the fights which were staged in VFW’s halls all across America. There was a lot of hype and the gates raised a lot of revenue, which went to charitable causes. I remember the first fight my Dad took me to. Everyone agreed that the badger would tear the dog up, and waiting for the fight to begin was exciting, to say the least. The dog was paraded out and everyone agreed that he would put up a good fight. After a lot of hoopla and beer drinking by the adults, the badger was finally let out of the cage. It was a mop head that was swung around on a small rope. All of the attendees who had been before had a good laugh on the uninitiated, and the MC made sure to tell everyone not to tell the truth about the fight so that the trick could be played again the next year.
It’s sort a like Bush and Bin Laden today. Bush being the dog, and Bin Laden being the badgers. Every once in a while the trot out Bin Laden like and old mop and let Bush fake like he’s gonna whup him. But, it’s just for funsies and to make a whole lotta money.

3. It means just that. And it was billed as a illegal fight. |
