I dedicate this *1000th* post to my brother, SGT RYAN FERRELL, who is currently in Iraq.
As I write this, the day after the sixth anniversary of the “day that changed everything”, my brother, Ryan, is somewhere in Iraq.

I haven’t heard from him for over a month, though I just *finally* got his address this morning. Not a moment passes without a thought of him, where he is, what he’s doing, how things are (as if I can’t imagine…) and a million other things that I wish I could ask him or tell him.

All day, every day, I wonder if he’s safe. I wonder if he’s alive…

Ryan plans to get married when he comes home… His fiancée is a wonderful young lady. Here they are together:

When I wake up in my somewhat air-conditioned apartment I wonder how hot it must be in the Iraqi desert during late summer.

When I take a shower and shave in the morning, I wonder how long it’s been since he has had the luxury of either.

When I set off for classes in the morning, I wonder if he’s setting off on an IED patrol.

And so my life goes. Every day is surreal, at least when I think about the hell that that foolhardy, brave, honorable son-of-a-bitch volunteered to plunge headfirst back into. And I always think about it…

Here he is sitting on the banks of the Euphrates during his first tour. His unit was on the front line of the invasion. They fought the Republican Guard while building a pontoon bridge across the river to get into Baghdad.

My mother sent me some clothes that I had left at her place. In the package were some boxes of candy cigarettes, with a note. I wonder what she sends Ryan. Knowing him, Wild Bill’s beef jerky, Dinty Moore beef stew, and Pasta Anytime.

Those are some of the things that he wanted the first time. I don’t even know if they still make Pasta Anytime.

I study history, professionally. This semester, I’m studying modern France. Right now, I’m reviewing the First World War.

War doesn’t sound so bad from a classroom a century and a continent away from where you sit.

But that was a long time ago, and far away.

But what of today?

What of the unmitigated horror that is right now, today, far from our shores, yet close to all of us?

My sister just found out that she’s pregnant. Ryan doesn’t know yet. I wonder how he’s going to feel about being an uncle…

The hell on Earth wrought upon Iraq in the name of the United States of America is just as remote as the First World War, to most people.

But not to those who are there, in the thick of things. And not to me.

When Ryan was young, he used to like to play with G.I. Joes. And I was the one who rained on his parade, and told him how G.I. Joe wasn’t anything like the real Army. He never listened… But he always had that peculiar gleam in his eye.

As we grew up, that gleam never dimmed. He enlisted at 17, and was fairly bursting with pride. Deserved pride, then.

I have always wondered, even if one is blind to the past, as so many obviously are, how can anyone say that they are blind to the present?

One may deny the unfathomable carnage of the past, foolishly so, but permissibly. But what about those who refuse to acknowledge the grim realities of the here-and-now?

I remember when Ryan was 15, he wanted to go out drinking with my friends and I. We gave him a couple of beers, but forgot to mention that the gallon of OJ wasn’t straight OJ… I think he still won’t drink a Screwdriver to this day.

The merciless bloodshed will continue unabated until the United States has removed its forces from the Iraqi soil. Gone. Period. Oh, I’ll concede that the violence will probably continue even after we leave, but Iraq will never be at peace as long as an occupying army continues to fundamentally violate its dignity.

Iraq was, for want of a more precise term, Humpty-Dumpty. It was a nation that was cobbled together from pieces of the Ottoman Empire. Once it broke, it became nigh-on impossible to fix it. Anyone with a modicum of education, experience, and intellect could have predicted this disaster.

And a disaster is just what it is, was, and shall be for the foreseeable future.

I remember when my brother and I were very young a Japanese company bought out our local steel mill. We decided, in our youthful innocence, to leave messages for the Japanese kids that everyone assured us would soon be moving into our town.

They never came. But we used to stare at our cryptic pseudo-Japanese, and wonder when they’d finally show up.

John Kerry once asked, under the aegis of youth, a youth rent by the terrible reality of war,

“How do you ask a man do be the last to die for a mistake?”

His question is pertinent, as it always will be. But in this case, there is another layer of complexity, of duplicity…

Why should a man (or woman) be the last to die for not a mistake, but a lie?

My brother chose his path carefully. He is a young man who has everything going for him… A beautiful fiancée, a good job, many friends, a sense of true community… And yet he chose to fulfill, as he saw it, his duty to his brothers in arms. He left this beautiful, kind, wonderful young woman behind…

In another post that I wrote some time ago, I described his rationale, as he explained it to me,

“I’ve been there, and seen terrible things. If I go back, maybe some 18 or 19 year old kid won’t have to in the first place.”

Is that courage? I don’t know. Is that honor? As I understand it, it is. Is that foolish? Perhaps… But regardless, he essentially volunteered to go back. His enlistment was up in December, yet he re-upped in January, knowing full well what was in store.

He didn’t go back because he believes in Bush, or because he wants to “fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here”, or because he wants to “spread freedom and democracy”.

He went back because he wanted to try and help to save the lives of his fellow American soldiers

Ryan joked about wanting to take this AK home with him because, “You could bury the fucker in sand for a year, and fire off a whole clip, no problem.”

I do know this… My brother, Sgt. Ryan Ferrell, is a devoted American. He is a man who would gladly give his life so that another might live. He is a man who would sacrifice himself for the greater good. He is a man who is truly duty-bound as he sees it, to be there with his comrades in arms.

And for his service and sacrifice, his love, his compassion, his sense of humor, his sense of justice, his love for his nation and its people…

I, his brother, salute him.

Yol Bolsun, Ryan. May there be a road. I love you, I miss you. We ALL do.

Come home to us. Come home to your family… Come home in one piece, and soon.

12. He had a hell of a time adjusting when he got back the first time.
And Iraq wasn't the chaotic, murderous madhouse that it is today.

I just pray that he gets home, and preferably in one piece.

I know a few soldiers who have been badly wounded over there, and one who didn't come home at all, Lance Cpl. Michael J. Smith.

http://www.militarycity.com/valor/257204.html

He played high school football with Ryan, and was a 7th grade student of my mother's.

This war has caused so much suffering, so very much, and unimaginably much for the people of Iraq.

I am ashamed that we haven't been able to put a stop to the unmitigated insanity of our "leaders".

There is a sacred trust that *previously* existed between the American Military and the American Public. They would be there to protect and defend. We would be there to support, to honor and to help with their burden here at home. They promised us they would keep us safe. We promised them we would never ask them to make the ultimate sacrifice unless absolutely necessary. We have failed. A good nation NEVER goes to war because it wants to. It goes to war ONLY because it has to. We have lost our way, and, most horribly, the soldiers of the American Military are paying the highest price. The cheney*/bush* Iraq debacle is illegal and immoral and exposes a vile cancerous tumor that has taken over our Government. Each of us, every last one of us, should hang our heads in shame that we have allowed these wonderful men and women of the American Military to be so used and abused. It is our shame. Our national shame.

Wake up, America!:kick:

yourself an e-mail with the thread link and you should be able to retrieve it. But I have lots of pretty old bookmarks that are still there.

You could also print it out, and you'd have a hard copy.

Does your brother have an e-mail address? You could just send him the link...

Again, thank you. Your post is so obviously heartfelt and full of love.

56. I like going to this site to get a sense of what the troops are up to:
Here is the latest article. This guy lives and goes on missions with the troops day after day. He tells it as he sees it, the good, bad, ugly, and with what I think is no agenda other than informing.
This is unlike most so-called "journalists" who never venture outside the Green Zone:

58. I pray for you and your brother. May the democrats stand tall. Please send
the message to them. I think it could help if they receive enough personal stories.

66. I'm going to kick this one more time for the night crowd...
My internet has been going in and out all day, and for the last five hours, it's been out.

:(

But I figure while I'm down on campus, I'll knock this post to the top of the GD list.

Thanks again, to everyone. Your kind thoughts mean a lot to me.

Let's all just hope and pray that Ryan gets home alive, and soon.

P.S. If anyone wants to kick this a few times during the late night, I'd appreciate it, as I probably won't be able to do so. I'd like as much of DU as possible to "get to know" my brother.

73. "If I go back, maybe some 18 or 19 year old kid won’t have to in the first place.”
That's the same reason my friend Danny went to war - he did it so somebody's husband or father wouldn't have to. Your brother sounds like a wonderful person, and I hope and pray that he will make it back home safely. :grouphug:  :patriot:

74. God bless your brother and your family
My cousin was in Iraq for three separate stays - he enrolled a little before Sept. 11 and it changed his life. He was on the wrong track in life and he's on the right track now, with a fiancee as well and a good paying job in the Bay Area. I pray and hope and that your brother will enjoy the same level of success. Whatever we can do to get him out of there, we will. He is a true hero for being selfless and you are truly lucky to have him as your brother.

:patriot:

PS - Gotta give a shoutout to Rutgers football - WV vs. Rutgers at the "Chop Shop" AKA Rutgers Stadium is gonna be bangin' this year, so RU RAH RAH!

86. Ryan was in basic when 9-11 went down...
I told him right before he enlisted that * was going to start a war.

My brother, arrogant son-of-a-bitch that he is, said, "Nuh-uh. Nobody's gonna fuck with the U.S."

How I wish he'd been right...

On a lighter note, WVU is going to win the nat'l championship, provided their schedule doesn't fuck them.

And I can't wait until we pwn Rutgers.

:)

I am a US Marine (an old one, but it is not the kind of thing you can stop being).

I have been reading here at DU almost daily for over a year but I rarely post anything myself. However, after reading your post I am motivated to do so.

The Marines have one word that they often use that describes your post perfectly.....OUTSTANDING.

My best to you and your family. Hang in there.

79. Great post!
One of my good buddies did three tours of duty in Iraq. He's back for good now but every time he came home he had a different opinion of the war. First time he was like "Oh everything is going great...". Second time his opinion was "Eh, whatever. We shouldn't be there." Third time his opinion was simply "fuck this war.".

85. Thank you, everyone.
I sent this thread to my mother. She's not a DUer, but oh well... :)

She cried her eyes out. And she was especially moved by YOUR posts. Here's what she wrote:

"Matt,
What you wrote made me cry..as if I haven't cried enough! It was so beautiful, so moving....your brother is all the things you've said..and more.....I cry EVERYDAY in fear...fear for his life...please understand, I beg God to take me instead of him if it comes to that....he is young and I am have lived my life..he is my child and I almost lost him when he came into this world, and I begged God then also to let me go rather than him--God had other plans and allowed me to bring Jo into this world....I survived his last tour, but am not doing well with this one..I know you understand that--the 3 of you are my life...I have gone back to teaching so that I do not have to cry and think about Ryan everyday, all day....YOU are a wonderful son also--never think that for one minute that I do not love you the same as I do Ryan, but right now I am consumed with fear for him as I know you are......YOUR words are beautiful and I thank you for being the good son that you are and allowing the world to know your brother as we know him..."

Thank you, DU. If it weren't for this board, I'd lose mu fucking mind, and post haste. THANK YOU.

Let's all hope and pray that this insane war can end, and soon.
