**Important information on heart attacks in women**
Just saw this today...

It's long, but well worth reading...

She said she didn't feel well and had a back ache and was going to lay
down on the bed with the heating pad. A while later her husband went to
check on her and she was not breathing. They were not able to revive
her.
This is something we women should definitely take seriously.

Please pass this on to those you love.

I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is
the best description I've ever read .........Women and heart attacks
(Myocardial infarction)

Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms
that men have when experiencing heart attack...you know, the sudden
stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest &
dropping to the floor that we see in the movies. Here is the story of
one woman's experience with a heart attack.

"I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 pm
with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect
might've brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold
evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my
friend had sent me, and actually thinking,"A-A-h, this is the life, all
cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up."

A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when
you've been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down
with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you've
swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is
most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn't have gulped it down so
fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass
of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial
sensation---the only trouble was that I hadn't taken a bite of anything
since about 5:00 p.m.

"After that had seemed to subside, the next sensation was like
little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE
(hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they
continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses
rhythmically when adminstering CPR). This fascinating process continued
on into my throat and branched out into both jaws.

"AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening--we all
have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals
of an MI happening, haven't we? I said aloud to myself and the cat,
"Dear God, I think I'm having a heart attack !" I lowered the foot rest,
dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the
floor instead. I thought to myself "If this is a heart attack, I
shouldn't be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere
else......but, on the other hand, if I don't, nobody will know that I
need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in a
moment"

I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into
the next room and dialed the Paramedics... I told her I thought I was
having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and
radiating into my jaws. I didn't feel hysterical or afraid, just stating
the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately,
asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door
and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came
in.

"I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost
consciousness, as I don't remember the medics coming in, their
examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their
ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but
I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the Cardiologist was
already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my
stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions
(probably something like "Have you taken any medications?") but I
couldn't make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer,
and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner
had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery
into the aorta and into my heart where they installed
2 side by side stents to hold open my right coronary artery.

" I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must
have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the Paramedics, but
actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire
station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my
Cardiologist was all ready to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going
on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival
and the procedure) and installing the stents.

"Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail?
Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I
learned first hand."

1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your
body not the usual men's symptoms, but inexplicable things happening
(until my sternum and jaws got into the act ). \ It is said that many
more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn't
know they were having one, and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take
some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation, and go to bed, hoping
they'll feel better in the morning when they wake up....which doesn't
happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine,
so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly
happening that you've not felt before. It is better to have a "false
alarm" visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!

2. Note that I said "Call the Paramedics". Ladies, TIME IS OF THE
ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER--you're a hazard to
others on the road, and so is your panicked husband who will be speeding
and looking anxiously at what's happening with you instead of the road.
Do NOT call your doctor--he doesn't know where you live and if it's at
night you won't reach him anyway, and if it's daytime, his assistants
(or answering
service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn't carry the
equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do,
principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later.

3. Don't assume it couldn't be a heart attack because you have a
normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol
elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it's unbelievably
high,and/or accompanied by high blood pressure.) MI's are usually caused
by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts
of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain
in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be
aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10
people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

My sister had a heart attack in 2005...

she demanded an ekg.
They finally found that she had another clogged artery.....
So they had to do an angioplast....

8. You know if you look at the old tapes and the new tape together
you can see the difference in bin ladens face. No matter how much you dye and clip you beard you can't change....the width of the bridge of your nose. The setting of your eyes in your head, and even something as insignificant as the difference of the side of his hair growth. It ain't bin laden.

Thanks for the information about the differences in symptoms. Our bodies are different than men's and they react differently. So much of the health information we have now is written for males, white males in particular. Thanks for posting this, it helps highlight this difference and reinforces that we women need to be aware of our bodies and not put off seeking medical help just because our symptoms don't match the more known ones.

26. This happened to my mom
She just didn't feel good and waited for a long while to go to the hospital. In that time, 90% of her heart was damaged. She was lucky enough to be young enough to qualify for a heart transplant. However that destroyed my parents economically until she died about ten years later. All because she never knew women have different heart attack symptoms than men. My husband didn't have any classic symptoms either, he just had very painful gas that wouldn't go away. Go to the doctor, to hell with the costs. Your family loves you and wants you around.

33. Hi Peggy!
Normal adult aspirin doses often cause GI bleeding which is why cardiologists recommend baby aspirin.

My family's cardiac history is scary ... my father had quadruple bypass in his mid 50s. :scared:

80. go to county!
At least in California, and many other states, county care is free!
You have to wait, (you can also call for an appointment) but do it!
A month might kill you, probably not, but....
It's best to get checked out as soon as possible, get a EKG
even if it's clean, it gives you a base line. I had one last year (man here)
and the doc said it was clean. That's nice to know because I'm rather large.

>plink plink< my two cents

Many thanks Peg! :) I'm going to forward this to my mom n wife to read!

I work in renal/transplant, but I've seen my share of heart attacks in women. So often it's described as "bad heartburn" Or not reported at all "I've had heartburn off and on for years" (Both actual quotes from women I've cared for who were surprised they had heart attacks.

This is such important information, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

43. My Dear CaliforniaPeggy
Great read and find,

My mom had 3heart attacks in a row in 1994, had a pacemaker and all that stuff put in
then in Octobra 2001 she had 3more, and was in critical condition and Doctor said she
needed a transplant.

I havnt told many people this, but when I got home, I screamed at the top of my lungs:scared:
and it was like I prayed like I had never, ever, ever done before.................
in 2days she did a '180' and stabilized......and is still with us today!!! :hi:
I dont know what happened, but it was for the better.

The thing that she had problems and didnt get it checked, she was really tired and lethargic
before the 2nd set of heart attacks....so everyone get your heart checked.

 :hi:

at work. Our lunches overlap and I was hoping we could have a nice little conversation about our weekend. When I came back from lunch I found the paramedics had taken her to the hospital. Poor lady has been under alot of stress in her personal life, and work has been pure hell for alot of us.
Just had an email from her that her tests came back good, so I'm happy about that!

48. On a lifetime basis, women have exactly the same risk of MI as men
It's just that the first one is likely to occur 10-15 years later. The percentage of men in the population of over 85s increases because after 85, we'v used up all our estrogen bonus points, so to speak.

And as you pointed out, they are more likely to kill us because we have different symptoms. Another reason is that they happen when we are older and less physically resilient.

Remember? Doctors stopped the study of women and estrogen after noticing increased risk of heart attacks?

60. Thanks for posting this. CalPeg!
As someone with a congenital heart problem, I'm aware that I could have a problem at any time. But I also have to keep reminding myself not to expect the same symptoms as men have.

This reminder is important. You may have saved a life or two.

Thanks!

62. MVP is nothing to fool with either.
It's how I got endocarditis. So, while you're giving the rest of us good advice, don't forget to take an anti-biotic before dentist appts and other invasive procedures, and generally take care of your heart. We don't know exactly what caused my endocarditis, but the greatest risk factor is a heart murmur. When it comes to the heart, there really are no little problems.

Again, thanks for posting!

66. My first thought: I don't have insurance, so if it's a false alarm, I'll be
accumulating huge medical bills I can't afford; if it's real, I'll have the same problem, and that will make me hesitate.

Welcome to my world.

I hear you...

I haven't always had insurance...

And I just tried to not think about the consequences...

If you do have a real heart attack happen, and you do nothing...

You could well die...

I'm afraid I have no suggestions as to how to remedy your situation...

Someday, I hope we will have single-payer health insurance for all...

Please, take care of yourself...

I don't know you at all....but I'm sure you have family and friends who love and value you...

85. Please seek help from a cardiologist as soon as possible
I began having severe angina attacks two years ago, and for reasons I won't go into here, I opted not to be treated with aggressive measures. The cardiologist prescribed meds, and surprisingly I'm still around. :)

Even if you can't afford angioplasty, bypass surgery, etc., you could at least see a cardiologist and start on heart medicines which could help until you do get insurance.

86. Thank you. I wasn't suggesting I was currently having attacks. This is the reaction I feel whenever
I read about good or important health news of any kind: "Gee, that's great; too bad, I won't get to benefit from it."

Also, like many folks with preexisting conditions, I can't get health insurance anywhere at any cost. (Job-related insurance is not an option.) I have to hope that single-payer health care comes into effect asap.

78. Men have these symptoms too
My own heart attack occurred almost the same way. Having got home from work, I had a cough and a strange sensation in my throat.
I grabbed my usual beer, first one of the evening(would also be the last one that night). I felt a sort of sore throat so I grabbed something from the med cabinet, sat down and felt a strange sickening chill throughout. My jaws started to hurt like nothing I've ever experienced. I got up to go lie down on the bed, took about five steps and passed out. I woke up with my wife beating on me yelling at me to wake-up. She insisted that I go to the ER, where after a young nurse convinced the Dr that Jaw pain was a sign of a pending MI, I had 3 stents placed in my RCA.

Good advice for everyone...

83. I nearly died last month from congestive heart failure.
Being a man I ignored many warning signs. Now I'm on 10 meds, waiting for approval for a stress test, waiting for anti-coagulants to kick in and hoping my doctor is correct in considering this incident a warning shot rather than the beginning of the end.

This post reminded me of how my mother ignored many of the warning signs, especially the indigestion feel. she died of a massive heart attack at age 63. I have e-mailed this post to my wife and every other woman in my address book. All of them have been in touch with me since my heart incident last month.

You've reminded me that when anyone asks if they can do anything for me I should say "Yes, learn more about heart disease." especially the women I know. thanks.

87. Thanks so much for this info!
It comes at a very trying time in my family's life. On Sept 1 my dad left for the day and said I love you to my mom. He said he'd be home after dark (he was going to a car show). When he came home my mom was dead. She was a lifetime smoker and she'd been having problems with high blood pressure which she was on medication for. He said that the Tums was on the counter as if she'd pulled it off the shelf because she felt heartburn. When he found her she'd been gone for a long time, my poor poor dad is so broken up. He said that she had been sitting in the living room, eating a bowl of cereal (she loved sugared cereal DAMMIT) over the coffee table, and had slumped down onto the floor, her hands were clenched and her head was on the coffee table. It had to have been very sudden.

She had been experiencing a lot of stress through some volunteer work she was doing and we all knew it was weighing heavy on her. My mom didn't hate people, but she was feeling those feelings of hate and was trying so hard not to. She was only 59 years old. My heart is broken and I am determined now that I have to get my health in order. Dad commented about how mom always INTENDED to exercise, she bought different gadgets and exercise equipment, but never used it. We ALL tried to get her to stop smoking but she was stubborn. She'd been smoking since she was about 14 years old. I wish I had my mom back and I so regret not asking her so many things. We've had fertility problems and she was our biggest cheerleader. Now I will never have my mom hold my babies (if we are ever blessed with them) or tell me how to do things.

Please forward the OP to everyone you know. It could save a life. My parents farm is way out in the country, and when my dad called 911, it took 25 minutes for them to arrive.. so I am not sure anything could have saved her, even a quick call before losing consciousness. That had to be the hardest 25 minutes of his life, he said he wanted to find some small sign of life, something to bring back, but she was gone.

I miss my mom so much, I never thought she'd leave us so soon. You can't prepare for these things- they hit you like a steamroller and they back up and roll over you over and over and over again.

90. My mother's sister had "indigestion"
and died of an MI at age 48. She had called a friend, who sat with her after she took a dose of antacid. The friend called the doctor when my aunt went unconscious, but there was nothing he could do when he arrived, although he did give my aunt an injection of stimulant directly into her heart.

That was 41 years ago.

91. Thank you CAPeg, great information. I wanted to add a little bit
of information.

There was a large study that was completed recently (maybe a few months ago, I'm looking for it so I can post the URL here). It said that aspirin only helped women over the age of 65. Well, come to find out, the research was done on HEALTHY women. If you're younger than 65 and have signs and symptoms of heart disease, you may, indeed, need the baby aspirin a day (In addition to other precautions, like the exercise someone mentioned).

It doesn't surprise me anymore that we don't get the complete information on stories the media reports. Mainly because I've been so involved in politics in the past few years!
