Host = Warren Olney = Considered the dean of Southern California broadcast journalists, Warren tackles the issues ...

A former governor is jailed for what sounds like business as usual; a procurement officer's conviction is overturned because of weak evidence. Wednesday, on To the Point, Democrats claim federal prosecutions of state officials are "fishy." We'll look at politics at the Department of Justice.

Siegelman and the Justice Department responds by building a stonewall. 5. Now the local news reporter. SPIN by Eddie Curran, Mobile Press Register
Edited on Wed Sep-12-07 02:36 PM by L. Coyote
The 44 are "friends" is the dismissal of the call for the Congressional investigation.

This guy is moving off subject to draw in several actual corrupt persons.

Eddie Curran, Mobile Press Register, is the guy.

State spending and 'Goat Hill' politics: A Register investigation

In 2001, Press-Register reporter Eddie Curran began a series of investigative stories focusing on the awarding of state contracts, finding evidence of overspending, apparent sweetheart deals and other irregularities. The stories sparked a joint state and federal investigation that on June 29 resulted in guilty convictions against former Gov. Don Siegelman and ex-HealthSouth Corp. Chairman Richard Scrushy. Two defendants, former Siegelman Chief of Staff Paul Hamrick and former highway director Mack Roberts, were acquitted.

Events and information that became the basis for many of the state's charges, including the existence of a secretive lottery fund and a substantial donation apparently orchestrated by Scrushy, were first reported by Curran. The Investigative Reporters and Editors organization and the Alabama Press Association have honored Curran for his work.

Below are links for Curran's 2001 reports and articles .........

10. Obviously, this is a partisan matter. Good juxtaposition of journalists.
Horton has slammed the coverage in AL:

There’s No News in the ‘Birmingham News’
BY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED September 10, 2007
http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/09/hbc-90001174

The Russian newspaper Pravda, which laughingly means truth, used to have a banner under the masthead that read “Organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.” So at least there was some truth in labeling: you could see pretty quickly exactly whose “truth” it was disseminating.

But Pravda is so easily upstaged by the Birmingham News, which offers no fair warning. It should say “Organ of the Executive Committee of the Alabama G.O.P.” This evening offers us a wonderful opportunity to see how they shovel lies, lies and more lies about the Siegelman case. Are they even conscious of the dissembling? Sometimes I wonder.

Today, the Justice Department’s decision to stonewall the request of the Judiciary Committee for documents concerning the politically tinged prosecution of Governor Don E. Siegelman was announced publicly. ....
