Waiter Fired After Leaving Shift To Save Carjacking Victim
A waiter in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who left his shift to rescue a woman being attacked by an armed carjacker was fired after the heroic effort.

Police said a 22-year-old woman was attacked by a knife-wielding man outside the 84 Thai Food restaurant in the Southland Shopping Center on Monday.

Restaurant waiter Juan Canales spotted the attack and ran to help. Canales said he tackled the culprit, who police identified as Albert Means, and held him until police could arrive.

However, when Canales went back to work, he said his boss terminated him.

"He told me you're dismissed, you're fired," Canales said. "And I looked him and I said, 'Are you serious?' (He said) go get out of here, you're fired."

What a jerk of a boss! If I lived in Ft. Lauderdale I'd be boycotting that restaurant!

1. Hope the good people of Ft. Lauderdale show the owner
they support the hero! Boycott indeed. Business people need to understand there are consequences to their poor judgment. A business license does not include the right to success while being a jerk.

4. Recommend that ...
the Floridians give this some talkup. If I were there, I'd boycott. This guy deserves a raise, not the boot.

6. Job offers are coming in for Juan Canales.

From UPI: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-flbcanalesnbsep12,0,6074633.story

He says he's been busy lately responding to job offers. His former boss at the restaurant won't even answer the phone now. I wonder why?

7. I suspect 84 Thai Food will have problems with business
I wouldn't go there if I lived there.

I hope Mr. Canales gets a great job offer from someone who hears about this. He's showed his character, and that should be enough to impress a large number of employers.

8. Thanks to the Internet
That restraurant now has a world-wide reputation.

And Ft. Lauderdale is a big tourist destination.

I'm willing to bet the restraurant goes out of business before too long.

10. I remember a similar incident back during the gas crisis of the 1970s
This happened back in the 1970s; I've forgotten where. I read about this in a news magazine whose title name escapes me. Sorry for the lack of details, but I remember this story like it happened yesterday.

Due to gasoline rationing there were long lines for commuters wanting to fill up in the morning, so this enterprising kid, Billy, age about 10-12 years, came up with the idea of loading coffee and pastries on his wagon and strolling down the line of waiting cars to offer breakfast. Well, this kid's doing great business until a local restaurateur calls the officials and complains that Billy is operating without a license--he hasn't paid any business tax--so the officials come out and tell Billy to shut it down. The general feeling is the restaurateur doesn't want the competition.

Anyway, word gets around about what the restaurateur did so his place of business is boycotted and he finally has to close up shop due to lack of business.

I don't know what happened to Billy...
