The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Monday that the acceptance speech the My Life on the D-List star made for winning a Creative Arts Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program will be edited for content when the ceremony airs Saturday on E!

That content being what the Catholic League is calling the redheaded comic's "obscene and blasphemous" remarks upon hoisting her statuette.

"Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?" Griffin responded to E! News Tuesday.

Kathy Griffin's Jesus remark cut from Emmy show

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comic Kathy Griffin's "offensive" remarks about Jesus at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be cut from a pre-taped telecast of the show, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said on Tuesday.

Griffin made the provocative comment on Saturday night as she took the stage of the Shrine Auditorium to collect her Emmy for best reality program for her Bravo channel show "My Life on the D-List."

"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus," an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. "Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now."

Asked about her speech backstage a short time later, an unrepentant Griffin added, "I hope I offended some people. I didn't want to win the Emmy for nothing."

1. People do not have a fucking sense of humor
I'm speaking about Donahue, the humorless fuck.

4. yeah, apparently catholics are as stiff as the protestant fundies
"The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences reacted responsibly to our criticism of Kathy Griffin’s verbal assault on 85 percent of the U.S. population," Donohue said in a statement on the group's Website. "The ball is now in Griffin's court. The self-described 'complete militant atheist' needs to make a swift and unequivocal apology to Christians. If she does, she will get this issue behind her.

"If she does not," Donohue said, "she will be remembered as a foulmouthed bigot for the rest of her life."

I guess he realizes threatening her with excommunication and eternal damnation is pointless. Must be tough to have your most cherished myths mocked.

5. Harboring pedophiles is offensive to me.
"Suck it Jesus"? Meh. But then, I'm a godless heathen. I figure if there is a god, he/she can handle an insult from a D-lister. I like how many people rabidly defend some invisible/non-existent being, but they won't lift a finger to defend a child from a depraved priest's lusts. Hypocrites!

6. I'm an ex-Catholic and at best an agnostic, maybe more of an atheist.
But "Suck it Jesus" offends me, simply because it would so deeply offend many Christians. I'm the first person to offer up the Jesus jokes, but not when I'm in the presence of somebody who seriously believes. Frankly, I'd prefer Griffin bare a breast or two, rather than make that comment.

7. So how do you know
you are in the presence of "someone who believes"? And why is "someone who believes" deserving of more respect than everyone else? I find it atrocious that Ms. Griffin is getting censored for this, when TV shows like CSI & Law & Order (which I in fact love) portray boiled heads, severed limbs, maggots crawling out of eye sockets, etc. Ann, Rush, Sean, Bill'O and the boys don't get censored for calling liberals terrorists and praying to God they all die, and that September 11 widows are cowards, etc. etc. The thing is, EVERYONE is going to be offended by SOMETHING. I get offended sometimes by what people say on or off the cuff, but I shrug it off - it doesn't bother me personally. So, I guess Jesus and religion is "off limits" then - if we can't make fun of the most "taboo" subjects in this life, we'll all die of boredom.

It is called comedy - and it is sarcastic, and edgy, and provokes thought. Sometimes it offends.

I, for one, am offended by most religion, so there you go.

P.S. Like it or not, Jesus was a socialist. And he'd probably laugh his ass off at this whole thing.

8. It Offends Me, Too
I usually don't have problems with religious iconoclasm, far from it, but this was just being gross and shocking for the sake of attention. It had no redeeming comic or social value.

If she had pulled her skirt up over her head and given career thanks instead to her female parts, at least that would have carried a brief, visual respite as a bonus.
