What I did in school today (abortion counter-protest) (dialup warning)
I'm a freshman Poli-Sci premajor at West Virginia University. After taking my first Political Science exam (and acing it, I'm confident) my domestic partner and I decided to walk up to the MountainLair (our student union center) to get something to eat and hang out for a while. When we got close to the Lair, we saw that a bunch of out-of-town anti-choice, anti-gay protesters were starting to set up outside the main campus. There weren't many people there yet, so we decided to stick around and help out with the counter-protest we knew was going to be set up shortly. Here are some photos we snapped before things got really heated up, as well as a couple we managed to take while simultaneously helping other campus feminists and GLBTs to hold up large sheets in front of their signs in protest. In the interest of decency and propriety, I have blurred out the disgusting details of their signs, as well as the faces of the children who were part of the group that was protesting.

This was taken when we first arrived. Looks pretty tame, I know, but classes were still mostly in session at the time. Incidentally, the two gentlemen walking together in the middle of the shot are my Poli-Sci professors this year.

More people starting to arrive. By the time we left, the crowd had completely filled the open spaces you see, as well as the other side of the street. Not a single student joined in on the side of the anti-choice bigots, but hundreds joined the counter-protest we held. The two young women in long skirts were handing out anti-choice "Chick Tracts", many of which people tore in two right in front of them.

This was taken by me while I was holding up one side of a large sheet in front of the anti-choicers. Roughly 30 students (of both genders) joined together to create a wall of sheets, almost totally blocking the disgusting mutilated-baby signs from public view. You can't see him well thanks to our efforts, but in the center of this shot is the "ringleader" of the anti-choice group, who was spouting misogynistic, homophobic venom with a bullhorn. Some students set up a large stereo and speakers in the area, and started blasting rock music to drown him out.

This is a sunburned me, holding up my end of the sheet. This was taken by my domestic parter ThinkBlue1966.

This is ThinkBlue1966 with her Flying Spaghetti Monster t-shirt on, holding up her end of our sheet.

One of their disgusting homophobic signs. ThinkBlue1966 and I stopped right in front of the woman holding this sign and did some serious same-sex smooching and cuddling. She looked rather upset, but refrained from comment.

One of the abused and exploited children of this group. These kids were forced to stand out in the hot, direct sun for hours today with no shade, no sunblock, and no water. We tried to report that to Campus Police, but they seemed disinterested. This particular child was rather badly sunburned by the time we left.

Two more abused and exploited children. So much for caring about the welfare of children. I tried to offer these kids some unopened bottles of spring water, but their parents/guardians refused to allow them to take it. Maybe they were afraid that their kids would catch Teh Gay from us. As for the sign this kid is holding...wow. Apparently, some people are rather terrified that people might actually think for themselves.

-----------

So that's what I did in school today. Now I'm off to find some Solarcaine for the horrific sunburn I got standing up for freedom and equality.
:hi:

I had similar nutcases on my campus back in the early to mid 90s.

3. Thanks!
I fully support their right to say whatever they want to say, but today I was glad to help stand up for the women who were being emotionally and verbally assaulted by these crazies.

The guy with the bullhorn kept singling out young-looking girls to scream "Whore!" at, just because they were wearing a shirt that showed a bit of cleavage and/or shoulder on a hot day. What a freaking jerk.

11. We had Brother Jim who would do very similar things. He wouldn't yell at the women
but would single them out and quote Bible verses at them that he thought was appropriate.

We get the crazies like you got today when they hold the annual Walk for Women's Lives.
I had so much fun with them in 2006 when I was 7 months pregnant. It blew their minds that I was there with my big belly! Ha!

7. They were really being jerks.
Shouting and screaming at young women the considered "immodestly dressed", calling them whores, etc.

I was GLAD to help thwart them. :hi:

We used to deal with that shit when I was in college too. Though our counter-protests were never quite that organized. ;)

8. Sweet Victory
Many years ago my dentist was in the same building as a Planned Parenthood Clinic. I had seen so many of the protestors picketing the site. One day I had a really bad toothache and had to go to the dentist and take my then 4 year old daughter with me. An old man carrying a sign approached us and patted my daughter on the head. He then ranted some kind of pro life (sic) message to me and handed me a flyer. I took his flyer, ripped it up, threw in on the ground, and told him I was pro choice. My daughter was MY CHOICE I said to him.

You cannot imagine the look on that man's face. Very, very sweet.

14. Great stuff, ladies!
Out of curiosity, do you know where these freakshows originated? Were they a local group (a WVU prof is the head of the National Right to Life Coalition) or one of those that travels around the country staging demonstrations?

22. SPF 50. ALWAYS. Never be without it.
I live in Florida. I see this all the time, even from residents who should damn well know better. (I saw an actress last night, wearing a blouse with a lower-cut decolletage than she had during the day. It was obvious, from the painful-looking red color of her face and her upper chest compared to the lower sections.)

ALWAYS have SPF 50 sunblock with you wherever you go. Put a small tube (filled from a big bottle) in your backpack. And if you'd had brought a big bottle with you, you could have shared it with your fellow pro-choice protesters...and watch the psychos refuse your generous offer of lotion and get their dose of melanoma.

Aside from that minor tactical error, you have my gratitude, whatever that's worth, for your courage. Thanks.

34. Kudos to you! Nice to see WVU is not all 'Mountaineers For Life'.
When I was at WVU I thought it strange to see all the notices on the bulletin boards for Christian student organizations -- many more than I had seen anywhere else -- and an apparently equal number of advertisements for male/female impersonater shows at the local bars (FAR more than I'd ever seen ANYWHERE). I was never sure if the target audiences were disjoint or overlapping.

37. As a friend of mine once said
"If Morgantown had 6 million people, it would be weirder than New York." He was thinking of the dichotomies of a place that has a buttload of fundamentalist churches (including something like 10 speaking-in-tongues sort of places) and organizations and one of the more active gay student groups in the country.

39. Hi there!
I'm pretty sure there are some other Morgantown DU'ers. I really want to have a meetup at some point in the near future; maybe a night out at Gibbie's, etc. I also want to find other WVU student DU'ers in particular, so we can get together at games, events, etc.
