3. Another acronym applies to his career
up to the time he started getting commands in Iraq: REMF (Rear-echelon MF). Before his 'glory days' in Iraq, Petraeus had served primarily as an aide (AKLC) to higher-ranking officers.

5. You're right he was either an aide

A student, and at one time a teacher at the USMA. In 2003 as commander of the 101st Abn Div was the first time that he was involved in combat

Below is a list of awards and decorations that he's received, the one I have a question about is his Bronze Star with "V" Device. The medal may be awarded for Valor (i.e. courage under fire), in which case it is accompanied with an attached V. So when exactly was he under fire, and what act of valor did he perform?

U.S. military decorations
Defense Distinguished Service Medal
Distinguished Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Clusters)
Defense Superior Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Clusters)
Legion of Merit (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters)
Bronze Star Medal (with “V” Device)-What act of "Valor" did he perform
Defense Meritorious Service Medal
Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters)

U.S. unit awards
