2. This probably wasn't done to eliminate jobs |

This was probably done in response to the severe nursing shortage AND the overuse of the ER (due to no insurance, harsh absence policies at work, etc). I don't agree with it...but can assure you it isn't there to eliminate jobs.
On edit I see that this was at Parkland. Not sure if you are aware but there is sometimes more than a 24 HOUR wait in the ER there. This isn't a bad thing.

3. As a frequent ER flyer (sadly), I think it's a great idea. |

Triage nurses are very smart and will never turn away a real emergency. But ERs are becoming clinics for the very unfortunate reasons you mention.
And as to eliminating jobs--there aren't enough nurses to go around now (as you are well aware).
Good for them.

4. Having people check themselves in does not make a doctor |
|
more availabe to see them, though.. A more evolved triage system might help..There are many people who use the ER as their only health care. More nurse-practitioners or even RN who could help the less ill people could cut down on the waits, but we all know how budget cuts affect care :grr:

5. Some hospitals are doing that |
|
What is being tried in some hospitals around here is having a Nurse Practitioner and an RN as a triage team. The patients that are using the ER as basically a clinic are being given prescriptions at the door or being given the name of area clinics. They never get past triage. THIS isn't the way to go. All it will take is to miss one thing and have a person die and the cost-effectiveness goes out the window.
