I Think George Will Just Murdered Fred Thompson in His Political Cradle.
Ouch! Ouch! And Ouch!

Conservative columnist, who is printed in more newspapers than any other (I think that's correct), this morning perhaps provided a mercy killing of Fred Thompson's fledgling campaign for the White House.

In fact, I think Fred was finished when George Will finished his column and sent it to press.

I hope everyone will read the entire article. I don't want to spoil it for you, but it just gets better and better and by the end the blood is all over Fred's cradle. Who knew that Will was a murderer?

All I can say is: Poor Fred, he's already dead. Enjoy Will's column.

****************

IS FRED NECESSARY?

By George Will

WASHINGTON -- Fred Thompson's plunge into the presidential pool -- more bellyflop than swan dive -- was the strangest product launch since that of New Coke in 1985. Then the question was: Is this product necessary? A similar question stumped Thompson the day he plunged.

Sean Hannity, who is no Torquemada conducting inquisitions of conservatives, asked Thompson: "When you look at the other current crop of candidates -- Republicans -- where is the distinction between your positions and what you view as theirs?" Thompson replied: "Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions."

24. Not entirely fair
The conservative nitwits do bounce around, and even the "balanced" reporters like Tweety display raging hardons for rightwing schlameels. Bill Kristol is a marvel of medical science, finding so very many ways to talk out of his ass.

George Will, in contrast, is a good old fashioned, honest-to-goodness conservative, imo. I disagree with the man. But, I do think he is honest in his beliefs and willing to re-evaluate his position when presented with better evidence. Again, this is my opinion, but I do think he's an ethical man who genuinely speaks for what he believes to be the common good. That's rare enough these days, I'm forced to praise it wherever it's found.

38. More or less concur about Will.
I agree, I rarely agree with the man, and at the end of the day he's DC Establishment-grade obnoxious.

But still, of all the conservative columnists, he at least makes an effort to appear somewhat balanced, and weighing different sides prior to coming to his (incorrect) conclusions.

You can't say that about 95% of the "conservatives" penning columns, at least that I've seen. He's a towering pillar of decency when compared to a loon like Cal Thomas, who is the second most-read syndicated columnist (shudder, horror) according to the recent Media Matters review.

10. Dems will never get a clear shot at Fred... Repub Candidates Will Take Him Out Shortly...
George Will thoroughly 'depants' Thompson in this article. But there is so much more that could be said.

Thompson has exactly no chance whatsoever of winning the Repub nomination.

Soon he and his wife Jeri will be wanting to spend more time together, and he will drift off into obscurity.

13. George Will writes a wonderfu column on occasion
he was great on the war recently and I have an old column about how hypocritical republicans are to say they are against government spending but finance their houses with government guaranteed loans, use the GI bill (ages ago) and on and on.

So who will the Republicans back? Rudy is sinking, Romney can't seem to take off. I predict McCain makes a comeback as the only legitimate candidate. No, I don't like McCain but he seems more genuine than Romney and more knowledgeable than Rudy.

Maybe The Huckelberry?

22. Not so Fast with Fred's Funeral
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 12:43 AM by FRedStates
You must remember George Will is a big Rudy Giuliani fan... and rather than say nice things about Rudy he chooses to say nasty things about Rudy's Rivals. And a look at the latest polls (Rasmussen has Fred over Rudy by 9 points now) and you can understand why he's taking aim at Fred. Lets looks just a little closer at what George writes...

Mr. Will wants us to believe Fred Thompson is unfamiliar with his GOP Rivals’ positions on the issues. Will quotes Fred Thompson. “… I haven't spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions." But Mr. Will fails to mention the rest of Senator Thompson’s response which was "I mean publicly. I obviously know where they stand and what they've done and what they've written." So why does the Pulitzer Award winning writer leave this out? Well... to make his point I guess... because if he includes it he has no point.

Will also writes “Thompson said he had advocated McCain-Feingold to prevent, among other things, corporations and labor unions from "giving large sums of money to individual politicians." But corporate and union contributions to individual candidates were outlawed in 1907 and 1947, respectively.”

Here George is trying to make it sound like Fred Thompson doesn't know what he voted for... but this is not the case. I’m sure Mr. Will is aware that despite the laws passed in 1907 and 1947, corporations and unions were still funneling large amounts of money to candidates by way of "soft money" and that was part of what McCain Feingold addressed. There was in fact a provision in that bill that specifically banned campaign donations from Unions and Corporations. Again, an important point Mr. Will chooses to leave out.

A little research on the Internet reveals that George is in Rudy Giuliani's camp... so don't believe anything he says about Fred or any other GOP Candidate.
