Portland news: Who cares about Shrub, it was about Snowball and Bucky!
In my neck of the woods, the biggest news item this evening was far from Shrub's babbling bullshit - the BIG reaction was regarding the fate of two deer; Snowball and Bucky.

Molalla family hires lawyer to fight for pet deer
KGW - Portland 9/13/07

MOLALLA, Ore. -- A Molalla family fighting to keep an impaired pet deer from potential euthanasia has hired a lawyer who specializes in animal cases.

Despite public furor, officials with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife moved ahead Thursday to release or relocate two black-tailed deer after removing them Wednesday evening from home in Molalla where the family had been caring for the impaired doe for five years.

Amidst massive public outcry, ODFW issued a pair of statements Thursday.

"...We empathize with the family that had clearly grown attached to the deer," said ODFW Director Roy Elicker, who also said his team "took the deer because one was taken illegally from the wild and both were being held captive illegally."

1. Local news never covers anything but "feel good," "feel bad," and "horror" stories.
We can't expect anything else, in this day and age. Local news is worthless.

GO TIMBERS!!! The playoffs start tomorrow! See you at PGE Park on Sunday!

3. How did she get pregnant?
Did a wild deer jump the fence? Has that been explained?

6. Yes - in particular because it started this way:
How It All Began

Snowball was lying on the side of the road by Mantei's house as she drove her children to school five years ago. The young deer's back legs were badly deformed, causing the hooves to cut into the skin every time the deer tried to take a step.

Every two weeks for six months, Mantei took the deer to a veterinarian, who fitted it with special casts to correct the deformation, and Snowball learned to walk better.

Normally, I don't think it's a good idea for folks to try and adopt wild animals (they are WiLd after all); though there are exceptions and given the particulars in this case --- these 2 deer should be allowed to return to the loving family that raised them. Snowball would have a "snowballs chance" anywhere else.

At least there is way too much publicity for the bureaucrats with the state to put them down.

4. Interesting situation
I guess it is illegal to pen a wild animal?? Is that the issue?

You would think there would be exemptions for a handicapped animal.

I certainly would think this organization would have a public relations nightmare if they euthanized Snowball

She is beautiful.

Ironic that they can keep pigs and horses but not a lame deer and her son.

5. There is at least one ranch in Oregon that raises deer for meat.
And corn bred venison is tender and delicious. Anyway, that's why I don't get all the hubbub.
