Dean Renews Call on Boehner to Apologize for "Small Price" Remark, Urges '08 Republican Contenders to Hold Boehner Accountable
September 14, 2007

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today renewed his call for House Republican Leader John Boehner to apologize for his reprehensible and offensive comments trivializing the sacrifices our brave men and women in uniform make for our country every day. Boehner's spokesperson has since tried to cover up the comments, saying that Representative Boehner was referring only to the monetary costs of the war in Iraq, but the transcript of the interview proves otherwise.

Dean encouraged Americans to call on their members of Congress to denounce Boehner's remarks with an online tool that enables users to input their addresses into a web form, compose a message and send it directly to their members of Congress. He further called on the Republican presidential contenders to join the American people in denouncing Boehner's comments and ask for a full apology, as time.com reported that John McCain dismissed Boehner's offensive remarks claiming only that "he misspoke".

The DNC online tool for Americans to contact their members of Congress is available here:

Boehner's deeply offensive comments trivialized the memories of the nearly 4,000 men and women who have lost their lives in Iraq and the 27,000 others wounded in action and show just how out of touch Republicans are with the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in uniform and their families make for this country every day.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean renewed his call to Republican leader John Boehner's deplorable comments:

"House Republican Leader John Boehner's comments on Wednesday are deplorable and he should apologize immediately. Our brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country and their families have made the ultimate sacrifice, and to say anything less is insulting to their memories and service. Republicans stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that their Iraq policy is a failure, our troops are mired in a civil war and we're not making the necessary political progress on the ground.

"Boehner's comments show how truly out of touch the Republicans are. The loss of a son or daughter is never a small price to pay, especially for a policy which was initiated by Republicans who misled the nation about why we are there. I call on all members of Congress, as well as the Republican presidential candidates, to join the American people in denouncing these offensive and insensitive remarks. But that alone is not enough. The best way to honor the sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform is to change course in Iraq and bring our troops home."
