BOSTON --
President George W. Bush wants more time for the troop surge in Iraq to work, but local military families said they want the troops home now. NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that military families will be listening closely to what the president says during Thursday's speech.
"We want people to know those of us in military families love our troops. We want to take care of them. And if we really want to take care of them, it is bringing them home," said Andover's Anne Chay. Chay's son returned to U.S. soil on Monday after serving 15 months in Iraq.
"Everyday when CNN in the morning said there was eight deaths, you didn't know until that night if you got the visit at the door or not if it was one of yours. Excruciating to say the least," Chay said.
Even though her son is back in the U.S., Chay said she knows he could be sent back at anytime. She said the Bush's anticipated pull out of 30,000 troops is not enough.
"When you meet the parents of the young men and women who have died or committed suicide, you really understand what the cost of this war can be," Chay said.
"It will be difficult. But yeah, we'll watch it," said Nancy Lessin. Lessin started Military Families Speak Out in 2003 and there are now about 3,000 members. She said Bush will spin numbers on Thursday.
"What he wants to focus on and what Gen. (David) Petreaus was focusing on is the issue of the surge and what the real issue to focus on is the issue of the war.
Our eyes are really not on George Bush, they are on the Congress of the United States that has in their power now to end to the war and bring our troops home now, and take care of them," she said. Bush will address the nation from the Oval Office Thursday at 9 p.m.
