Krugman Bombshell - Bush Oil Buddy Cuts Deal with Kurds
Krugman Bombshell - Bush Oil Buddy Cuts Deal with Kurds

George Bush didn't just lie through his teeth when he said that the Iraqis had passed legislation to share oil revenues between regions and ethnic groups.

For instance, Bush asserted that "Iraq's national leaders are getting some things done," such as "sharing oil revenues with the provinces" and allowing "former Baathists to rejoin Iraq's military or receive government pensions."

He covered a greater lie. One of his Texas oil business associates and political advisors, Ray L. Hunt cut a separate deal with the Kurds to produce their oil.

This is solid evidence that Mr Bush is preparing for partition of Iraq.

Paul Krugman released a bombshell editorial today that exposes the flaming carcass of the "nation" of Iraq for what it is. There is no nation of Iraq. There are three major ethnic groups fighting for control of resources and a number of smaller groups fighting to survive.

Given that there is no nation of Iraq and the U.S. still needs Iraqi oil the fall back position for big oil is to cut separate regional deals with the regional governments. That is exactly what has happened. Paul Krugman reveals:

What’s particularly revealing is the cause of the breakdown. Last month the provincial government in Kurdistan, defying the central government, passed its own oil law; last week a Kurdish Web site announced that the provincial government had signed a production-sharing deal with the Hunt Oil Company of Dallas, and that seems to have been the last straw.

Now here’s the thing: Ray L. Hunt, the chief executive and president of Hunt Oil, is a close political ally of Mr. Bush. More than that, Mr. Hunt is a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, a key oversight body.

The surge, the Petraeus speech and Bush's latest speech are all political Kabuki theater. They all know that there is no nation of Iraq. The surge in Baghdad provided cover for ethnic cleansing of Sunnis - as intended. The arming of Sunnis in Anbar encouraged the formation of Sunni enclaves. The nation formerly known as Iraq is now close to complete ethnic cleansing. And Bush's closest friends and allies are profiting.

7. Don't miss the salient point
One of Bush's own political allies, a very well-connected white guy in the oil patch, concluded his own oil deal with a group that is in open defiance and opposition to the Iraqi central government. That's the central government that so many thousands of our troops and Iraqi civilians are dying for. That's the central government that's getting the alleged best and brightest of our military, financial and political support. And one of Bush's pals just delivered a devastating swipe of the scythe at knee level for his own personal financial enrichment.

What should that tell our friends in the popular media?

10. This story needs to get out. If you have Times Select Krugman blogged on this.
The conversation is VERY intelligent, knowledgable, and thought-provoking. The surge is working: break up Iraq, and deal with each faction separately to make oil and other corporate deals.

12. "This is solid evidence that Mr Bush is preparing for partition of Iraq."
Compare Brownback from Monday:
“The progress cited by General Petraeus creates a unique opportunity to forge a Sunni region similar to the Kurdish region in the northern part of Iraq.”
http://babylonians.wordpress.com/2007/09/11/brownbacks-plan-for-iraq-and-petraeus-testimony/

That would leave a Shia region to the east. Sounds like an endorsement of the partition idea to me. Did he get the memo??
