Vietnam Wall Vandalism is a False Flag Attack on the Anti-War Movement
RW'ers are screeching about how the Vietnam Wall has been vandalized, and to them it had to have been perpetrated by Leftists Anti-War Activists. But, if you read between the lines, something doesn't seem right.

* Anti-War individuals have been declared the culprits by the Right Wing without eliminating any other possible perpetrators or the fact that it might have been accidental.

* The story spread very quickly through conservative news sources, and for some reason they were quicker on this then the rangers in the park were. This may be because they had access to information that wasn't real and they were just making certain stuff up.

* This story is connected to a Right Wing activist who declared that Anti-War groups would vandalize the monument in an earlier protest (Didn't happen BTW).

Anyone know where Phil Parlock is at?

2. Please--the Riech Wing HATED the Vietnam memorial when it was unveiled!
Has everyone forgotten how these warmongering RW fuckheads complained that it was too negative, and insisted that a more glorious-looking bronze statue be installed nearby?

And now they decide to pull this shit?

12. Funny you should mention that...
I wasn't even aware that it had been built, but we visited DC recently and I happened upon it.

I gave it a big "eh." Looked like it had been designed by committee, to ensure that each state got equal time.

18. Exactly.
To each his own I suppose, but while I found The Wall powerful and moving, the WWII Memorial left me cold, and that shouldn't be.

19. Oh God no! They have ruined the beautiful Reflecting Pool.
I supported a WWII memorial as well but this truly is a monstrosity.

What next, Reagan on Mt. Rushmore?

Our society is truly on the decline. We have lost all taste and the sense of the sublime.

What's done is done, but this sums up the controversy beautifully:

"The Rainbow Pool site is no empty area waiting to be filled. The spectacular open space was designed in 1912 by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. The area includes the Rainbow Pool along with the abutting rectangular-shaped Reflecting Pool and the two rows of specially planted elm trees.

This radical proposal departs from the concept of open vistas that has guided city planners in Washington, D.C., since it was first proposed in 1791 by Pierre L'Enfant and realized and extended by the McMillan Plan of 1901-1902.

...

In addition, the design violates the National Historic Preservation Act by adversely changing this historic area.

The center of the National Mall, like all great works of art, should be left untouched."

God forbid we have open vistas with gasp! trees and grass.

24. First off, it's a Monument, not a Memorial
That's despicable enough. That they paved over "The People's Mall" is an additional abomination. Even worse, from my perspective, is that they desecrated the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with EVERY concrete and metal monstrosity scattered on the Mall after the Wall.

When the Wall was proposed, one of the loudest and longest hues and cries had to do with intruding on the Mall ... and ruining the unbroken expanse of 'contemplation.' That's much of the reason that the design by Maya Lin was chosen - acceptable to the "out of sight, out of mind" crowd. Little did they realize the power of the escarpment.

As we've cluttered the Mall with monstrosities (glorifying WAR) since then, we've also lost sight (anti-memorialized) the very lesson that over 58,000 died for and over 2.5 million of us sacrificed for.

27. This is unrelated, but this thread
reminded me of the highly pretentious Maya Lin.

29. Correct! I was in D.C. at the time and the RW was in a rant over the wall! Said it was an insult
to the service members. I thought at the time it was because the designer was a woman, an Asian and (gasp) a Yalie undergrad.

Now it is the most visited place in D.C. Now of course the RW loves it because they were proven WRONG.

22. the last time there was an anti war rally they did something similar.
They tried to make the right-wingers think we were going to vandalize the memorial. When no threat appeared, they looked foolish.

25. The memorial is beautiful.
I was really surprised by how moving it is. It's an awesome tribute to the many men and women who died for NOTHING.

I can't imagine an anti-war activist wanting to desecrate it.
