Sources: Retired judge may replace Gonzales

From John King
CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A retired federal judge is a leading candidate to replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, whose last day on the job was Friday, two sources familiar with the search for a successor told CNN on Saturday.

Michael B. Mukasey presided over many high-profile trials as chief judge for the Southern District of New York.

Michael B. Mukasey, 66, was nominated to the bench in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, and was chief judge until September 2006 for the Southern District of New York -- a high-profile U.S. court district that's one of the nation's busiest.

One of the sources for the Mukasey information is a government official who spoke on the condition he not be named; the other is a conservative activist close to the Bush White House.

1. If Chuck Schumer doesn't object...
Not familiar with this particular judge, but if Schumer considers him acceptable...besides, he has to be a better choice than Olson and the other DOAs that have been mentioned as potential attorneys general.

Time to write a letter to Snarlin' Arlen.

4. I respect your opinion, but I'm missing the point. Willing to listen, though.
I am absolutely willing to concede that you may know something that I don't. All I recall about Omar Abdel Rahman and El Sayyid Nosair is that they received life sentences for their involvement in the 1993 WTC bombing.

All I recall about Silverstein is a controversy as to whether the destruction of the twin towers was one event or two, and that was over the insurance.

Would Mukasey be AG in an ideal world? Perhaps not. I have a few other candidates in mind, none of which are likely to be nominated by W.

As I don't live in NY state, I have to rely on Schumer's opinion, which seems to be sound in most cases, unless someone shows me contrary evidence.

Realistically, the next AG is going to be a compromise. As long as the compromise doesn't require giving up civil liberties, I can live with it for--what, about 16 months?

If there is something I don't know about Mukasey, I'd be delighted to have facts. I like facts. Facts are good.

5. I saw red when I read Jose Padilla's name. That man got a raw deal
if anyone did, though I don't actually know how this judge was involved. Maybe I'm jumping the gun.
I also don't like his political affiliations, but that's a given.

3. Schumer Found Chertoff Acceptable
So much so he held a press conference with him to announce the nomination. Guess my senator thought Chertoff would treat NYC fair and square when it cam to distributing terrorism money since he was from the area. Boy was he wrong/
