I Was Thinking About Becoming A Republican
From The Smirking Chimp

By David Michael Green
Created Sep 14 2007 - 9:21am

I was thinking about becoming a Republican the other day.

No, really, I was! Ya know, the money’s good. And you don’t have to share. And you don’t really have to care about the impact of what you do, or what people think of you. Rich, selfish, carefree. That’s not such a bad life, is it?

Yeah, I was really considering it. But then I realized that in so many ways, I’m not really cut out for it.

I was thinking about becoming a Republican, but then I realized that people would know that I thought George W. Bush was cool.

I was thinking about becoming a Republican, but then I realized that I really don’t feel comfortable demanding that my underclass ‘volunteer’ military fight wars that I myself would refuse to fight.

I was thinking about becoming a Republican, but then I realized that I just don’t need another expensive car as much as poor kids need healthcare.

I was thinking about becoming a Republican, but then I realized that I actually believe in the ideas of the Constitution, like limited presidential power.

1. It's tough to become one if you have a conscience

3. You know - I have really pondered what you have just posited
I can't help but believe that those of us that are liberal/Democrats really do have a conscience and want to do what is best for not just ourselves but for all Americans. What I cannot understand about conservatives/Republicans is do they really think that they are doing what is best for America or are they secretly just out for themselves. This is hard for me to understand (and I'm not being flip here either). What do they tell themselves when they are alone with themselves? Can they possibly be as duplicitous and hypocritical as they seem?
The part about this that is especially difficult is the Christian aspect. I am a fairly devout Christian and I cannot understand how these conservatives who supposedly avow CHristian principles believe that Republicanism reflects, in any fashion, Christian ideals.

4. They are just out for themselves and others like them
but since they are the only ones who count, that counts as patriotism.

Now do you get it? ;)

(This is honestly my opinion of their mindset. They never think about outsiders, people lower down the totem pole, etc., because their minds cannot conceive of its ever happening to *them*.)

7. You are surely a Christian in the sense that Jimmy Carter is.
I believe he is one of the most truely moral leaders in America today.
