Think Progress: Former judge Michael Mukasey top AG pick
Edited on Sat Sep-15-07 06:03 PM by cal04
AMERICAblog notes that CNN is reporting that Michael Mukasey appears to be the administration’s top pick to replace Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General. Mukasey is a former federal judge who “presided over many high-profile trials, including that of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 co-defendants, who were charged with plotting to destroy New York City landmarks.”

UPDATE: Mukasey also issued the first ruling in the Jose Padilla case after 9/11. While he ruled that “President Bush did have the authority to hold Mr. Padilla as an enemy combatant without charging him for a crime,” he also “ruled that the government must allow Mr. Padilla to see his attorneys.”

UPDATE II: Mukasey is an adviser to Rudy Guiliani’s presidential campaign.

UPDATE III: AP reports that some conservatives are already “drafting a strategy to oppose him.
Olson is among three Giuliani advisers whose names have been floated as possible attorney general nominees. The others are former deputy attorney general Larry Thompson and Michael Mukasey, a former U.S. district chief judge in New York.

Some legal conservatives and Republicans have expressed reservations about Mukasey's legal record and past endorsements, and said some groups have been drafting a strategy to oppose him.

Mukasey is an old friend of Rudy Giuliani's who twice swore Rudy in as mayor in his own East Side apartment, and whose son joined Bracewell & Giuliani as a partner in 2005.

4. I'm not sure any nominee
can get through. Leahy has repeatedly said: No subpoenaed info., no confirmation hearing.

2. K*R - Very good info. Larry Thompson=Providian=SubPrime
This could be the guy. Any other time, there would be demands for someone truly independent but
I've not heard that from any corners.
