6. Surely that is NOT what she is referring to.
I think the effeminate side of man is the subject that is being discussed.

15. There's a difference between "effeminate" and "feminine."
Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 04:08 AM by Raksha
She appears to be referring to the Jungian concept of the anima or feminine aspect of the soul, which exists in every man (it's counterpart in women is called the animus). In very "macho" men it is primitive and undeveloped because it's repressed and unackowledged most of the time. When it does emerge, it tends to resemble a whiny, bitchy, nagging little girl more than an adult woman.

But then I probably have rather jaudiced view of the anima at the moment, because I've been positively mauled for over a week by an acute case of anima possession on another forum.

8. interesting to consider, in light of this article re: contempt for the "feminine"
http://www.buzzflash.com/contributors/05/09/con05332.html

"But if there were a single feature of conservative political psychology that has contributed the most to the recent horror show of death and unfathomable yet preventable suffering that has so riveted the attention of Americans, it would be the fear and hatred of the care-taking functions of government, what Republicans since Ronald Reagan have reviled as the “mommy state.”"

21. Yes, that's the point, isn't it......
Fear and hatred of whatever appears "feminine", whether it is care-taking or simply working for livable compromises, rather than jumping headlong into righteous conflicts that can't be won and/or end in disaster.

9. Can't EDIT at this point . . . so I'll add comments here . . ..
Didn't see all of the program; hope to catch it later on C-span....

But she was talking about how we have been taught to believe in gender differences/values which really don't exist --

And that because of that mythical info that we are taught, men and women are kinda straight-jacketed into thinking in those terms.

She suggested saying that if you say to a girl, what would you think about this if you were a boy, that it can open up entirely new ways for her to think about things.

And that while males have a wider world to work in, they are still restricted by these gender myths.

Soo -- females are to be anti-military --
males are to be pro-military -- but very often they are not.

The male imperative is to dominate women and nature --
a highly destructive force --

I don't want to say that males and females accept these roles -- it is more of a problem of their being taught these things and society imposing these myths upon them.

So, Steinem was pointing out that males have to fear adopting any value which is seen as "feminine" by our society. And within that thought, comes the title of the thread . . .
"that the woman that man fears most is the woman inside of himself!"

10. The lesbian trapped in a male body
So as a man who is seriously opposed to war and concerned with the environment, I am "in touch with my feminine side"?

Do we really need a hypothesis on why some people do not have the gift of rational thought?

This message is brought to you by the people who gave you ADHD. Drug companies are already working on a new product that will bring out the woman in you and psychologists all across the country will line-up to fill out the prescription forms because that makes them feel like the doctor they want to be deep down inside.

Psychology, just another pseudo-science.

12. People who think the term "pseudo-science" nowadays are typically 3rd-rate thinkers...
... at 2nd-rate schools.

And adhd came from psychiatry, not psychology. Is medicine also a pseudo-science?

"masculine side" -- are a fallacy.
There there are no such things. That all of theses concerns, all of these values, all of these traits are not split by gender -- but belong to both genders.

Congratulations, however, for simply recognizing you own humanity and being true to yourself!

24. Yeah, after all those myths of male sexual superiority . . .
but, I'd suggest to you that males can have multiple orgasms ....
but it means "going dry" and that's not much discussed re males.

Some women's magazines began to mention that quite a few years back, but then the subject disappeared.

My experience as the female involved suggests to me that it might take a shift in emotional thinking
for males -- or simply letting their more loving emotions rule -- which can happen to males unexpectedly!!!
