Question about posting to DU |
|
As you can see, I recently posted my 300 th message to DU. I'm trying to do my posting where it is more easily readable by others and also easier for me to keep track of. I find that by automatically adding a post to my journal as I am composing it, it makes it easy for me to later find to check for responses.
When I click on a thread to read the responses, I see that most posters do not appear to update their journal. But maybe I'm missing something.
Which brings me to my question. Do most posters find it easier and more efficient NOT to use the journal ? I know mine has almost 300 entries, most of which are of no importance to me or anyone else. My first thought is just to keep the very few posts that I think are important.
To save or not to save. That is the question. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Willie

2. Are You Familiar With The MY DU Icon? |
|
That's what most of us use to check for replies to our posts, though it is only relevant for the first 48 hours after the post was made. After 48 hours, you could always find your posts by either adding them as bookmarks or using the advanced search feature (if you're a donor).

3. You can also use the "bookmark" function which makes it easy to find ones |
|
you want to hang onto..
I think you have to have a star to search, but that's helpful (sometimes).. You can also type your own name into Google and retrieve a lot of the stuff you post ..
Welcome :hi:

for the political toons I do every so often. I do not save every post to my journal because most are just replies to other posts, not original threads started by me. It is just a personal choice as to what works best for you.

7. I wouldn't save them all, because many of them could be frivolous |
|
But if you put some effort into it and feel like you want to remember it, then save it to the journal.

8. I only stick posts into the journal |
|
that I think somebody else might be nuts enough to want to read.
As to locating my posts for responses, I click on "My DU." Posts are kept there for 48 hours. There are generally no responses beyond that time period unless the post is on an exceptionally slow moving forum.
Do weed out your journal. The worst thing you can do to people is make them wade through pages of one liners to get to the one or two posts you're proud of. Most of them will give up.

You can also use the "My DU" feature to see who is replying to your posts, but your posts drop off "My DU" after 48 hours. I use my journal mostly for things that I post as a thread, rather than replies. I guess it depends on what you are using your journal for.

10. I'm on almost daily, so I can usually find responses to my posts in My DU... |
|
...under My Posts. Many of my posts are spontaneous and/or conversational, so I don't bother to put them in my Journal. Occasionally, I'll post something I consider journal-worthy, which is an entirely arbitrary decision in most cases, and I'll put it in there. However, if you just want to check up on a thread after the 48 hours or whatever it is that My Posts lists it, you can use the Bookmark feature, which is also listed in My DU after you bookmark a post. Can you follow any of that? I'm barely caffeinated yet.

12. I use my journal to keep track of items with links that may be otherwise lost |
|
but come in handy and ideas I may wish to refer others to in the future.
Why not make a donation and then you can use the My Posts feature for 48 hours to check responses and also your DU BOOKMARKS where you can mark threads and the DU server will keep them filed for you.
Beyond that, I have a DU file in my browser bookmarks. I have it divided into sub-folders which are topic specific so I can find old thread where people have posted really important info and/or resource links. It is very helpful since I am getting on in years and the memory is not rock solid anymore.
It doesn't take a big donation to DU to get a star and use the handy features the guys have provided for us. Makes the experience more pleasant and much more productive.

Welcome to DU Willie! I'm late, but welcome anyway. I use MyDU at top of page to check last 2 days of replies, sometimes Bookmark posts I want to keep an eye on special, use Journal for what others might find nice to read again.

I started building that web page several months ago. I figured if I could ever get the design the way I wonted, I would have no trouble in adding material. Now that I have it designed, I can't decide what to put on it. It's amazing how particular we get when we have our own page :-)

you journal. Whenever I say something substantial, as opposed to "ataboy" responses, I add it to my journal. Let me add a belated welcome to DU.

18. I appreciate all of your comments. |

I hate to sound this dumb, but I had never realized that My DU would help me keep track of what threads I had replied to. I shall use it in the future and stop using my Journal except for posts that I have spent a little time and thought in composing.
Matter of fact, in the next week I shall go through and delete most of the entries in my Journal.
I have used the bookmark feature but only for threads I wanted to keep track of without relying to.
Thanks again, and have a great week.
Willie
