"If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what a people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."

-Frederick Douglass

RIP Dave Cline

And to all of you who criticize ANSWER and Cindy Sheehan and anyone else who speaks out against the war on Iraq because you disagree with HOW they speak out, please look at the big picture. Dave did that. His death is a huge loss to the anti-war community. He knew the importance of our struggle and the validity of every voice in the movement. May we learn much from Dave's legacy.

3. You are welcome
I read your response on that ANSWER thread and I should have responded because I found it the most reasoned reply in that thread. But I just wasn't in the mood to kick that thread at the time.

I am just sick and tired of the fighting among us. The big picture is the war. This isn't about nitpicking everyone and every group that wants to participate. I am so over that.

Our local group is full of Ron Paul supporters. They used to be big 9/11 tin foil hatters. I disagree that Ron Paul is the best thing since sliced bread and I don't buy all the 9/11 conspiracy stuff. But I also don't go to our vigils to argue with people who choose to participate because they want the war to end. Our fight is with the idiots who drive by and curse at us and flip us off. Infighting does nothing but hurt our cause.

And our cause has lost one of our greatest leaders. Let's remember Dave by uniting instead of dividing.

4. Anyone who believes there should only be a single voice in opposition to tyranny ...
... is merely supporting tyranny. The posturing by some that all other voices must either sing in harmony or be silent is engaging in tyranny as well.

9. More from Douglass. On both parties *puny* opposition to the war.
Frederick Douglass, former slave, extraordinary speaker and writer, wrote in his Rochester newspaper the North Star, January 21, 1848, of "the present disgraceful, cruel, and iniquitous war with our sister republic. Mexico seems a doomed victim to Anglo Saxon cupidity and love of dominion." Douglass was scornful of the unwillingness of opponents of the war to take real action (even the abolitionists kept paying their taxes):

The determination of our slaveholding President to prosecute the war, and the probability of his success in wringing from the people men and money to carry it on, is made evident, rather than doubtful, by the puny opposition arrayed against him. No politician of any considerable distinction or eminence seems willing to hazard his popularity with his party ... by an open and unqualified disapprobation of the war. None seem willing to take their stand for peace at all risks; and all seem willing that the war should be carried on, in some form or other.
